    Double Up

Fraternal twins (cows ovulating more than on egg at a time) is heritable. Identical twins is a random occurance. I think MARC had some lines that threw 30-40% twins. If you bought a bull out of these twinner lines he would not produce any more twins than any other bull would, but his...

    EPD's

You do have a point here. To keep the EPD's in your herd from getting out of wack with the rest of the breed you need to have some reference sires in your contemporary groups or be selling enough semen on your own bulls to generate some outside data to get them compared to a larger number of...

    EPD's

I don't think talking about the same thing. By variation, I was just referring to the difference in what the calves weighed which gives you your ratios and then the ratios are used to help calculate EPD's.

    EPD's

Alan, Traits are infuenced by genetics, environment, and heterosis. The amount of variation in the trait that is caused by genetics is the heritability. The remainder of the variation is caused by environment or heterosis. When animals are raised in the same environment or contemporary...

    EPD's

The reason the bw wasn't the same was either that you reported a bw when you registered the calf and they used the ratio to adjust the EPD's or that the parent's EPD's may have changed if the # you were using wasn't current.

    Black/Brown calfs/What breed are they ?

It is not the presence of the red gene that dilutes the black color. Cattle can be homo black can still have a really brown tint to them and hetero black animals can be jet black. It is most likely caused by a fawn or dun gene. The ones that do come out brown, reddish, or mousy will be...

    Carolina Fortune or Top Brass

Just updating on Carolina Fortune. I was told they are collecting him again and there is some semen available. I don't know if ABS has any available yet because he has to go through all of the health tests again. Seedstock Plus has some and I think Cattlemens Connection has some also.

    Bull/Cow Pedigrees

A lot of small breeders keep great records. What gives the big breeders the advantage in generating accuraccies is the number of progeny that they get out of their bulls. They are able to get much larger contemporary groups with more different sires represented. It is a much better comparison...

    Carolina Fortune or Top Brass

I have some fall calves by Fortune. They look good seem to have good thickness and growth and are put together nice. I have been told that ABS has no semen left on him and may not be able to get him to collect again. I saw a couple Top Brass calves at some sales recently and they looked good...

    Whats The Next Breed?

You are wrong about the Gelbvieh and Balancer part at least. There are several breeders in Nebraska including some of the largest and most well known Gelbvieh herds in the country. http://www.gelbvieh.org/members/results ... 2&state=NE

    "Line Breeding" Results!

Mike, I posted this because there are uninformed people who would think you are serious. This tread a while back had a calf with a similar twinning deformity and there were some blaming inbreeding and genetic defects. That is why I posted it. I knew it was a joke. What I didn't know was that...

    "Line Breeding" Results!

For those of you that may be tempted to buy into this B.S., these kind of defects are not associated with linebreeding or genetic defects. They are just forms of siamese twins with varying degrees of separation. And like any identical twins, separated or not it is a random occurance, not genetic.

What is the bull market like this spring so far?

The averages on the bull sales around here have been down and several no sales. We sell mostly private and we have started getting a few more calls the last couple weeks. We usually have 3/4 or more of our fall bulls sold by now, this year it has only been about 1/4 so I shipped most of the...

    Name that breed!!!

What color is the calf? If the cow was white (WW genotype) then she would produce 100% roan calves out of any solid colored bull (RW or BW). The cow looks like she is a darker shade on her neck, may just be dirty, but it looks like a different base color pattern with a dilution gene.

    Name that breed!!!

It is odd to get a grey cow from a shorthorn, angus cross. Shorthorn should not carry diluter genes. Are you sure she doesn't have some Charolais in her?

    Feed Efficiency

Feed conversion is a highly heritable trait and is influenced little by heterosis. The reason that British X Continental are more feed efficient is because they are leaner and heavier muscled than straight bred british cattle. It is breed complimentarity that helps you with highly heritable...

    Does Calf Size Matter?

I did not realize they were ET's when I made the first post. While I don't put as much importance on actual bw on ET calves, I don't disregard it, and 118 lbs would make me less inclined to buy him. As for the calf shape.......that is another discussion. Someone told me once that if big...

    Does Calf Size Matter?

Sorry Mike, I didn't realize that he was an ET. I would still be concerned but would put some consideration into the contribution of the recip to his bw. I have not had any ET calves quite that big. I would still be leaning towards making a steer out of him.

    Does Calf Size Matter?

EPD's are computed using ratios. When this calf ratio's high on bw, then his EPD will go up. At this point he will still be an unproven bull with little accuracy. And any cattleman worth his salt will look at the actual bw, along with the epd and make his decision based on that. There are...
