Any one have any experience with Carolina Fortune breeding? How about Top Brass? Any opinions good or bad?

Since nobody else has responded I'll throw in my 2 cents. I don't have any experience with Carolina Fortune, but I have several JBOB cows and a few of his bulls. Overall, his cattle are very moderate framed, and his bulls have produced some really good replacements heifers for me. I think 92C was Fortune's dam, and she was an excellent cow.

I haven't seen alot of calves off either but the top brass calves i have seen seem pretty common. A there are others who have just, give a bit of time for responses.

I have some fall calves by Fortune. They look good seem to have good thickness and growth and are put together nice. I have been told that ABS has no semen left on him and may not be able to get him to collect again. I saw a couple Top Brass calves at some sales recently and they looked good. There was a Top Brass heifer that brought around $3500 on the HAGA Futurity Sale.

I was told that some of the Top Brass progeny seem to be a bit flat muscled, so he may work best on more powerful females.

jnowack, thanks for the update on Fortune. I was wondering why he wasn't in the most recent ABS catalog.

I know that both bulls are still quite popular and I think TSCC used alot of both and from what I remember they looked quite good and sold very well.We have been using Boo Boo and Kalina Moderator and so far they look good but its still early to tell they are still quite young..I have a WJW Freedom Fog yearling son that I am going to use on my heifers and 2nd calvers this year.He turned out really nice and very gentle.I am also looking at some new A.I. bulls to use ;trying to get away from that SLC Freedom Bloodline. It seems him and Leachmans New Day have their genetics in alot of AI bulls.I have been looking through the ABS catalog and there is not much selection for reds in it and Semex-Westgen doesn't have any in it.I personaly dont like the deep reds I prefer the lighter reds and golds.

Hi Hillsdown i have seen a fair number of moderator bulls and i like them they were good thick, stout, big nutted, deep bodied bulls. The majority were gold colored and either horned or scurred i have only seen one or two clean polled ones. I have never seen a female in production. The boo boo cattle i have and have seen are pretty good as a group i like the butts, hair and thickness but would like to see larger testicles in the bulls. The females are good mamas from what i have. Twin star had alot AI bred to top brass but i haven't heard of any rips yet. Freedom and New Day were outcrosses back in the day when they first came out and the really popular bulls were Horizon and Summit. and before that Hockeye and Belgrad but that is a bit before my time.If you want a kick butt lighter colored bull HL is using a bull ARN 114K i have seen alot out of him and the bulls have been pretty good for a while and i just calved a daughter i will put up a pic. The udder is exactly what i want so i am going to see if i can get one before the old bull is gone. As far as AI light colored bull check with cattlemen's connection and see what is avalible for import to canada. Bennet C333 is a pretty good light colored bull try universal i have seen a few from him and for the most part they were good. Check with Albert Carlson he has some semen on his gold bulls i have seen sons they have been pretty good but the draw back is that some are horned. I don't know if that is a problem for you. But His 64 bull is pretty good as is his austria bull he is a calving ease bull. So that is my two cents take it for what it is worth check with other canadian gelbvieh breeders like elwapo on this site.

Thanks SK.All the Moderators so far have been gold but it's kind of a strange year for calf colors>I have two SM cows and they had solid gold/red calves this year I've never seen that before. And two black GV heifers that calved to Boo Boo one was a blue grey (very cute) and one was light red. I had to band the blue grey one even though he was out of a really good TSCC heifer because I don't know who would want one that color.Thought about using him myself but I only 12 blacks so it's not really worth it I would rather A.I. them.Have you heard anything about DVE and what's going to happen to their bulls?I will look at that web site for the semen right away it's getting close to breeding time want to start calving the first of the year.

I posted pics of my 114k daughter with independance calf. I have found independance to be a great heifer bull, i think this is his niche in the breed. The blue colored boo boo i have seen that before and by fall they are coal black. I hope you don't regrets banding him come fall. Haven't really heard whats happening at DVE. Hopefully they don't have to slaughter all the cattle that ate the feed. Glad i could help , hope breeding season goes well i still have a few left mostly commercials and heifers that didn't catch to AI.

Glad to here WJW freedom fog worked well for you. We raised him. We have used some of his semen (we didnt keep a semen share but semex gave us some straws for in herd use). He sure knocks some leg off and deepens larger framed females. My daughter did very well in 4-h with a deep soggy female sired by fog.

here is a pic of my daughters fog sired heifer

She's a beauty I can see alot of resemblence with her and "Big Gun" .Big Gun is out of Mandy1P who is out of KCC Amanda1M who is out of KCC Amanda 8K the Sr.Champion & Reserve Champion Female at the Interior Provincial Exihibition in Armstrong B.C. last fall. The only thing strange about Big is he got really hairy compared to my other bulls over the winter.I hope he smooths out because right now he looks like a wholly mammoth. He is not that tall(high) but he is really long, and has the sweetest dispostion. If I can get a decent picture of him I will post it.

hillsdown,

It is hard to find good red genetics that don't have Freedom influence down here in the lower 48. I've went back to using a little Polled Summit. After being disappointed with some of the later model Gelbvieh bulls I decided to go back and use some Summit since worked so well for us in the 90's. I've had a couple really nice heifers out of him in the past couple years.

We bred a few cows to Pld Resource last year and will have his calves on the ground in a couple months. He's another older, red bull. I never used him prior to this, but others that had have talked highly of his progeny. Cattleman's Connection and Bull Barn both sell semen on Summit and Resource.

Thanks alot you shouldn't have told me that. You should have just let me see for myself. Now I will be looking at him everyday to see if he is getting any darker. Oh well to late now once their gone their gone.No wonder he kept pulling them back up when I was trying to band him.I checked out the picture they are all cute and adorable at that age aren't they and 114K daughter looks like a real nice animal sound and a good udder. Is she(the calf) going to be a lighter red color when she matures? What is the bloodline of Independance and is he calving ease and polled? When you get a chance let me know.I see you are busy with OT on the RCALF forum.I at least enjoy reading your responses and then how he skirts the issue and changes quotes;makes me laugh.

Also I will post some picks of my Moderator calves and my Boo Boo calves and also Big Gun my fog son.
Thanks for all the input.HD

Elwapo, just got your catalog yesterday. That Fog son is quite hairy also,so I guess it runs in the family but I like him.Good luck with your sale you have some really nice stock I'm sure you will have a full house.I am hopefully set this year for bulls but you may just see me next year.I have a Prestige bull for sale this year also he is the only male out of my purebreds that I decided was good enough besides the Fog son.He is out of TSCC Miss Keen 956K.Was wondering if you or SK have used any (SQW) Squaw Creek GV bulls for A.I. or of you have seen or heard anything about them.Independant Breeders Just sighned this bull on and he looks pretty decent polled good gains and a calving ease bull.He is SQW Polled 118H and he is out of the JRI line.Anyways let me know when you get a chance.
Thanks for you input.HD.

Independant breeders was bought from Harry by Genex/CRI. They took over day to day operations march 1. As for other SQW bulls i haven't seen them , but i looked up 118H he is a JRI polled Resorce son. He looks good in the picture but what concerns me is that for an H bull he only has 10 progeny registered in the US all from 1 herd and only 2 daughters in production. So his numbers are low for accuracies. But then again i am not a big numbers guy. I think he is worth a try and if he works good there should be more semen avalible.
As for Independance he is a bennet bred bull. He is sold by semenex up here you can get more imfo from their website. I talked to D.Hickman and he saw him at stud on the hoof he is as dark as his picture and long but fairly narrow. I bred heifers to him and will do it again my biggest calf was 78lbs, all unassisted. For me he is a heifer specialist. I don't think i would use him on cows. Actually the picture came out alot lighter it wasa a really sunny day the cow is alot darker as is the calf, most are a bit darker than traditional gelbvieh color. As for polled he is hetero polled but i only have polled calves.
That 114k daughter has a better udder now than when i pictured it. I will try to get more up. She is deep, thick i might want to see a bit more length. By all apperances she will be a pretty good cow but time will tell.

Hillsdown.
I have never heard of Squaw Creek or their A.I bull. So I cant comment there. I have also never used Independence as we have our own walking heifer bulls that we tend to use. I have seen some good females out of him. But it seems that not many bulls make it. Speaking of making it.....
I am semen testing today and getting the sale heifers palpated. Looking out the window it looks like a typical windy Southern Alberta Spring day. We hit +19 C yesterday.
Cheers

Thanks for the help Elwapo and SK.Hey Elwapo is that sign off "cheers" a typical Medacine Hatonian thing to say?One of my best buddies lives out there and he always ends his emails to me with cheers. He is not a rancher though used to own Crabby Mikes and The Beverage in the Hat.Any how hope your boys all tested well .Cheers HD.
