    when to feed alfalfa hay?

I wouldn't be worried one bit to feed some alfalfa along with the timothy hay. Timothy is alot better feed than people give it credit. We run our cattle on timothy fields in the winter and feed them mostly export timothy kick-outs when we need to feed hay. They do real well on it. We do feed...

    Getting Birthweights

I tie up their legs and use/hang them from a handheld scale. More times than not on the back of a pickup!!!! Not that all the cows are bad, but it makes living a healthy life easier.

    2007 Breeding Season

Adding on to Doc's prediction about 878 being used in the future, it's already happening. ABS claims that sales on him had begun to increase again this last spring. People have had a chance to get some daughters in production that have proven to be good cows, and they want to make more of...

    Best Bull Next 5 Years

I will be interested to see what becomes of Radar. I think he is a decent bull and with him being enlisted in the Circle A Ranch testing program, we will learn more about how produces for the real world, not just the show ring. If he would test out well, I would definitely use him to make baldies.

    Angus bull with muscle

I have seen some extremely thick, good structured cattle out of this bull. A breeder I know around here has had very good luck with him, and they are thick as I have seen for quite awhile. http://www.universalsemensales.com/deta ... ngus_id=37

    Freeze branding

I froze branded the heifers I kept for replacements this year with their ID number. I used 99% alcohol and liquid nitrogen. I clipped a few clear to the skin and on others I left a bit more hair to see what works best. On the blacks I held it for 30 seconds and I had a red one that I did for...

    Registered Red Angus question.

When he does the transfer on the papers, just have him note the dates the cows were exposed to the bull on the reg. papers, then when the calf is born, you can register them in your name. He will be noted as the breeder still. That's how we do it with the AAA at least, I am sure its the same...

    REPLACEMENT HEIFERS? How and Why!

I think most of it comes down to how your operation is set up to manage replacement heifers. We are able to run our replacements by themselves on grass and hay. They don't get any grain ever in their lives. If they can't do it our way, they are sold as they cull themselves. The other thing I...

    What about these 2 bulls

I think the 789 bull would be the best bull to use, whether Brahman influence or not. He is super clean in the sheath and looks like he would help keep the "ear" look off of cattle.

    Favorite Heifer

Pretty nice young heifer, although she looks like she could be a little longer, but nice otherwise.

    New Design 9150

I used him a few years ago on some heifers and got calves that were way too small. They took forever to grow. Not one stayed around to find out how they are as cows. I was very disappointed in him since I figured there could be some value in the calves, good calving ease and good carcass traits.

    Pharo Auction today

I get a kick out of the people that get so wound up about Pharo's thoughts and mental-meanderings. This is one outfits opinion, if you don't agree, let it go. If what you are doing works for you great, don't worry about what Kit says. It's not like he is calling you on the phone and...

    Connealy Lead On

I think semen might be hard to get a hold of. I thought he died last year and was somewhat limited on semen availability. But I could be wrong also. We used a son of him last year out of a Venture Forward cow on our heifers. We'll have to see how the calves turn out, but I don't know if I am...

    AI class for this dummy

Alan, Did Henry Yaeger teach the class? He was the instructor when I took it through Select Sires. HEck of a nice guy with tons of experience. I don't think you can find a better class in the NW than going to the Select class. You'll be all set to go AI now that it isn't long until AI season.

    Angus AI Bulls

If you are looking for calving ease, I would look at the Nebraska sons pretty well. They are easy calving, which really is coming from Focus. Make sure you look at the bulls themselves to make sure they have the calving ease look. Cowboyup216, what size heifers did you breed MD 111 to? I...

    SAV Predominant offspring

Thanks for posting that. I sell for Accelerated, but have not seen anything out of Predominant yet. Good looking cattle, and pretty good for birthweight. It was hard to see alot of definition in the pictures, but they all lokk real good. Do you own part of Predominant?

    Local Seedstock Producers

I would agree that you don't need to castrate all the bulls that aren't the best. Especially if you can feed them yourself. By the time you start selling bulls, you can eliminate the bottom 25 to 50%, and move them to another area to finish off for slaughter or sell them at the sale barn...

    New bulls and heifers

How far did you have to haul them from where you bought them. If it was a pretty long ways, keep your eyes open for new calves arriving a little earlier. Hope you enjoy your new purchase.

    Sinclair Rito Legacy

In my opinion, there doesn't seem to be much of anything wrong with that bull. I think alot of people would be real suprised on the frame scores of alot of bulls they use. Most easy keeping, functional cattle are frame 5 to 6. And the scrotal epd is a tool, if he has measured at 44 cm, that...
