    youngest heifer to calve??

I just had one calve at 18 months. Looks like I had a fence jumper somewhere. DNA test on the calf I guess to see if my herd bull jumped the fence. This heifer was checked in October as I was running her through the chutes with the rest and checked open. I was surprised to see her bagging up...

    Got one dried off

The dropping barometric pressure seems from this front seems to have kicked it off for me. Had a couple on Saturday and two more drop yesterday. This morning I noticed another going off by herself with her tail stuck out. Luckily we do not have snow yet but plenty of rain......that is turning to...

    That time again

Calving season has started. Had a heifer born yesterday and a bull born this morning. Keep em' coming :D

    Another first for me

So far she seems to be handling both nicely. I'll probably start feeding her and get her bred back and pull the heifer early.

    Another first for me

I'm taking a wait and see approach. She is a big framed heifer with a big udder. I may feed her along and watch her condition.

    Another first for me

Saw that my 7132T heifer had twins. Unfortunatley it was a bull and a heifer. First set of twins born on my place.

    Going rate for leased bulls

At the end of the day you are responsible for the health of your cows. If he will pay for the vet check (trich is now a growing problem in our state) all the better but if not I would if I were you for the sake of your 7 cows. If I only had seven I would just synch them up and have a tech A.I...

    Recording Birthweights

I use a hand held scale used for weighing luggage. You can get them at just about any store that sells luggage. They are digital and have a steel S hook on them. I attach a wide strap around the calf and pick it up like a suitcase. The weight display locks when it gets a reading. I hold it up...

    Selecting Semen

I know very little about simi's. That being said I talked to a producer just down the road from who says that he is part owner of Grandmaster and of course uses him heavily. I see his cattle and they are impressive. I heard they do well at the shows and they look like they do well in the pasture.

    BSE Score

I was looking at the BSE score from my Seedstock Plus bull. He scored a 95. What it doesn't say is how that overall score is broken down between morphology, motility and physical attributes. It does say motility is "high" and that he had a 39cm scrotal. Does anybody know if there is a % of the...

    Brangus Breeding Help

Just some words of advice.......if I were new to the cattle business I wouldn't raise Brangus until I had allot of cattle experience. They are a great cross but can really hurt you if you don't know how to work them. You will usually get docked for too much ear at most any sale in Tennessee...

    Almost There

Better early gestation than late. I had a heifer go 2 weeks late.....calf was near 100 lbs. She had it but she really struggled. They are putting on a ton of weight in that last few days so running over due date can really pack the lbs on a calf.

    Almost There

So far so good. I have had good luck on the calving from this particular bull. I have had a bunch of calves out of him and only had to pull one from a heifer mostly because she just got tired. I don't anticipate any issues but I try to watch them close.

    Almost There

Got another nice bull calf today. Three more cows to calve and the commercial herd will be done for the year.

    Composite bull

I agree with 3way. If you are looking for a roping steer by all means use a Corriente. If you want to do something useful in the beef business get a beef bull.

    $11.50 for a good Fortune

For the most part yes. They could have tried using an electro ejaculator but the semen would have had to travel through the end of the sheath and possibly contaminating it. I decided not to risk it.

    $11.50 for a good Fortune

Mine was a bit cranky which is very out of character for him. Maybe it was being poked and prodded on by the vet. I can't say I blame him.

    $11.50 for a good Fortune

No. The swelling went away and he seems comfortable but he is unable to extend it. I am taking him to the sale barn on Monday morning. Prices are high right now and high dressing slaughter bulls were bringing 1.04 last week. He weighs 2,040 so I should get a couple grand in salvage.

    Composite bull

Try a Gelbvieh bull.........they will give a Jersey bull a run for his money as far as libido goes. No female within 3 miles is safe from a Gelb bull :lol2:

    $11.50 for a good Fortune

I spent $11.50 today on a Fortune..........my Carolina Fortune daughter that is. I was giving her a last shot at being prego. I had never observed any signs of heat from March, which is when I bought her, to May when she was in with other cows. I synched her up and A.I'd her on the 1st of May...
