    When a calf dies...

She'll dry up,they always do. Have heard it said if the seal on the tit was'nt opened it's even better.

    Birth weights

We have a question. We are calveing quite a lot of baldy and straight black heifers and are puzzeling about the pelvic size in a number of tthe straight blacks. They are supposed to be super light birthweight, themselves. We A.I. D them along with the baldy's andour own straight herefords and...

What percentage of your retained heifers make cows?

We expect 50% that last past 3. We cull all the time on many things and sometimes a few go elsewhere after 4-5 calves. Thinking that we can replace a average cow with a superior heifer, sometimes works, always hopeing that the newest herd sire is a bit better than one of the older ones. Maybe...

    calves stealing milk

We surely beleive in seperateing those calved out from them that are waiting to calf, especially heifers as they are'nt real great colostrom producers. On older cow's we are'nt as concerned as real range cows will not usually allow much fooling around. I was told that a lot of exotics were not...

    F-1 Herf/Brimmer 1St

Are you relly sure that she is a first calf heifer?? I noticed her tail and just looking at the picture would call her and her general condition a mature cow. Mouth her and see as it is very interesting to me!! Thank you !

    Frozen bull nuts?

Like many things frostbite can and does happen, but if the bulls are in good shape and can get out of the wind it is'nt usually a problem. A scab on the bottum of the scrotem is usually cosmetic and looks worse than it is. Bedding, windbreak, and good condition eliminates nearly all freezing.

Bad way to start the morning. Graphic picture

Always sorry when someone loose's anything, but it is part of being in the business. One thing I did notice that she was black and being a Hereford breeder was always told that black cows wont prolapse! Run into a mess years ago on a bunch of heifers in the feedlot and did'nt get them aborted...

    How early?

Had 2 bulls that sired quite short gestation calves, one was pretty accurate and about 16 days early. The other one we used all his life on heifers and was very successfull at 7-10 days , makes quite a difference on birthweight. Never had or expected any problems and the calves growed out well...

    Calving issues

There is so many different problems that causes abortions and or premmy calves and if you have any more I sure would get a vet on the payroll. These cattle are worth to much money to lose them before due time. Here at this time there is a bad ice problem and some of the old girls are traveling...

    Composite bull

Is there some kind of contest or race to see who can comingle and or mess up their cattle the most or worst?? How can such a mixture be market'd[one or two at a time??]. I was raised by old time cattle traders and it was accepted that uniformity was a virtue. Maybe sort 2 or 3 owners cattle into...

    dead heifer

Sometimes things just happen's and there is'nt anything to be done about it. This maybe your calving trouble for the season. I personally never heard anything about a cow dieing from a torn umbilical cord. I think I would beleive that the bloody nostrils are a thing to consider moreso than a...

first post and a rather uncomon problem

Every so often some one somewhere has a problem that is'nt really funny, but ,sure is humerous. There is no such thing as a cow that can't be captured if you really want to do it a good horse and a rope and a bit of time is all it should take. Where do you live? What set the old girl off? She...

    cutting back on feed

I'm pretty sure that cutting back on what you are feeding will have none or almost no effect on your calves birthweight. Range Expierment Station at Miles City has done a lot of studies on feed and birthweight and it looks like there is a lot of other things that can be aproblem other than...

Why did you choose your breed?

Can you sell meat directly to the consumer? We can here only if it is harvested and prosesed in a federal inspected plant. Other wise we sell the animal alive to the consumor and they pay to have it process,d Dumb rules and hard to make it work at certan times of the year. Not many federal...

    Lepto question

I've never heard that lepto could be spread this way, wonder if the person has'nt got lepto confused with tric as there is a lot of talk going around and apparently it is and has finally attracted multi-state interest? Had a bad run of lepto in feedlot type situation maybe 50 years ago. Have...

In every so many birrths there are some freak'y thinghs happen ,who knows why? Have saw a calf with a similar problem and quickly put it down, another odd thing of nature. Usually when there is one problem there can be something else show up.Good chance that the cow will never have any more...

small corriente cow to angus bull problems with BW?

I guess that I would believe that nature long ago took care of the problem calving corriente and longhorn cows. Being a producer of primarily english beef cattle<,I would be a little anxious to cross some of our recently developed minatures with a sire that showed a large birthweight. In some...

Questions for cattlemen that raise bulls...

You are absolutelly right about the dam's side and its importance. Any good seed stock producer should know the cow's side of his herd sire's ancestry as well or better than the sire's, after all we are all produceing animals for the future and in nearly everything Mom is very important to...

    Birth condition

It'll straight'n up in a few days. When the beef business went wild on the size ,there was quite a few of these showed up usually a large calf and some old calving believed tha the calf was somehow doubled up in the cow those last few days before birth. Never did really know but seemed like a...

Blue Christmas and 13 was an unlucky year.

Dad and Grandad always told me "those that don't have can't lose". Luck is a fickle thing and sooner or later it gets most everybody. Just about the time I thought I had all the answers in this cattle biz, mother nature steped in and showed me how life really is. Don't look back and most times...
