    Weird skin lesion

Healthy yearling heifer, just noticed two circular marks on vulva skin. They are side by side and about the size of a dime, completely round, not raised, smooth dark gray (same color as the skin) with a puncture in the center. They look nothing like ringworm. South-eastern Ontario.

    Plastic Bag Question

A friends' eight month old bull calf was seen eating a plastic bag, about grocery bag size. He is eating and looking normal and they have been checking poops to see if it came through. Will it cause him trouble, or what's the liklihood of it passing on through?

    Purina "Horse Charge"?

My feed store accidentally gave me horse feed, their own mix, that contains Purina Horse Charge. Anyone know whether it is ok to feed to the cows. I already dumped it into the bins, but I'll get rid of it if I have to.

    Another beginner electric fence Q.

I have a paige-wire fence, with a strand of electric in front of it. Can you ground with a wire from the fencer unit, attached onto the paige wire fence? I'm thinking all those fence posts would be grounds, the same as a dedicated ground-rod and clamp? Thanks.

    Non-breeder??

I have a well-grown 16 month heifer, exposed to the bull but came in heat again three weeks later. I noticed she was later to start cycling than the other yearlings. Also, She still wants to jump others four/five days after her breeding day (no bull interest after breeding day). I wonder what...

    dark scours

What should I give a four-month calf, weaned ten days ago? She has a dark scour, very liquid. I am feeding fine second-cut hay and a calf ration. I wondered if it was too rich and cut back on the grain, altho I was told they should have the grain free choice. Could it be worms?

    Early Weaning

I have a cow sold and her calf is not quite three months. He does eat hay and a bit of grain with the mom. Will he be ok now without his mom, and is there anything extra I can do for him? I have a neighbor that makes his own calf ration, and I have some lovely fine second-cut hay.

    Tagging and re-tagging

Ia there a special tool for removing an old tag, or will some household tool do the job? I have an AllFlex tagger. I could use some tips on getting the tag in without ripping the ear. Do you hold the ear, or will haltering the cow up tight work, so as to have both hands for the tagger? Thanks.

    Yellow discharge

I have a cow that calved about ten weeks ago. She had one heat, very short standing and with a bit of clear mucus. I was watching her three weeks later and didnt see any heat signs. Examined inside her vulva and she has a bit of yellow discharge. Does this indicate infection? The calving was...

    Keeping a Bull

What is the best housing arrangement to keep the bull happy during the "off season"? The last bull I had here was just young, I got rid of him as he was nasty and I had a hard time separating him from the herd when necessary. Any tips for minimal handling/separating facilities for a very small...

    Electric in Winter?

Real Beginner question! Does electric fence work in winter, where the ground freezes several feet deep? If so, will it energize one strand, or do you have to arrange the wires differently?

    Thin heifers

I just bought some heifers. I was intending to breed them right away, but now they are home I see they need worming, delousing and are thin. Not desperate, but thin. I will worm immediately and be paying special attention to feeding, but going into winter would it be a bad thing to breed them...
