    Fence Fixed

Growing up on a dairy farm, we had a neighbor whose fences were even worse than his pastures. Many days their cows would wander amongst our cows. Diplomacy having failed, Dad hit upon an idea. We milked two hours early. We milked our cows, and their cows, then put them back. *After 3 days...

    Ford Explorer Sport Trac

Towing capacity depends on three factors: 1) which engine 2) which transmission 3) what rear axle gear ratio. If looking at a new one, Ford dealer has a TRAILER TOWING GUIDE which can tell you to the lb. for vehicle you are looking at. If looking at a used one, first check glovebox for...

    ...with apologies, TumbleWheels, not tumbleweeds.

Frenchie - You could as easily be right - I don't know as I never saw in print only heard of'em in speech. Either way thank you for pic which pretty well explains darn things. Now question is would they work and save a bunch of time or just another hair-brained idea and a waste of...

    ...with apologies, TumbleWheels, not tumbleweeds.

The tumbleweeds are a new tool. They are shaped like a starfish, and used with electric fence wire. The idea behind them is that instead of pulling up and moving electric fence posts, you simply walk down the row and roll the tumbleweeds ahead without disconnnecting wire to move cattle to a new...

    Dairy Farming

We use a 4 inch wide nylon tow strap made for pulling 15000 lb. tractors out. Those kind that stretch out like a rubber band and then retract. Spreads out shock of initial pull and doesn't cut into an animal as a chain can. Just an idea. J&L's method great if have labor on hand. Us small...

    ...with apologies, TumbleWheels, not tumbleweeds.

Has anyone tried those tumbleweeds used in place of electric fence posts in a rotational grazing setup? I believe they were developed by a fellow in Missouri. If you have tried them, would they work where you can get 60 - 70 mph winds, or do they just blow away?

    Birdsfoot Trefoil

luke - looks like a good plan for what you want to do. The trefoil, clover, timothy could all be mixed 2-gether and planted via small seed box on your drill. Other guys up this way had poor luck with ryegrass, so I never tryed it hence not familiar with size of those seeds. if they are more like...

    Pure Brome Hay

Thanks fellas - Normally would just go ahead and test hay, asked for "estimate" because am buying a farm that has a couple big fields planted to pure brome, just wondering if it will be drycow/heifer hay or possible to use for milk cows. You have answered my question.

    "started" calves

MM - You have a couple things in your favor. One is limited mortality as you have skills to keep 'em alive. Other is by time heifers produced by SS are being sold as springers, the calves you buy today will be well into first lactation. If market drops so low you can't bear to sell them...

    LA 200 v.s. Nuflor

We had a nasty bug in our calves and nothing was working. The Vet prescribed and gave us a bottle of Gentamycin(Yes he put his sticker on bottle). If it is BANNED as more than one post has stated, did the Vet do wrong to give us this product? This was over 10 months ago. Could it have just...

    SEX-SORTED semen for BEEF?

The mass(or weight) of male and female sperms are just enough different that they can separate(sort) the two using a very precise centrifuge. the companies doing this are talking 88-90% accuracy using this technology. Probably be primarily used by Holstein dairy farmers to produce more heifers.

    Twin calf reproduction?

In our dairy herd, we are currently milking 2 sets of twin heifers(4 cows). Pretty good proof they reproduce.
