    questions with bottle calf

Ok, picked up a bottle calf today at auction. Got her home and set up in her clean pen. She wasn't very active at first, mainly sleeping. About 3 hours later went out to put up a tarp wind block and she was standing, everything looked normal. Went to put up tarp, and she started spinning in...

    Heifers

Ok, I may be overlooking something obvious, but how do you know if a heifer has been spayed? Other than being told/ having it done? Is there a way to tell by looking? Do they have to be tagged? Mainly if someone was to purchase from sale barn, is there a way to tell? I'm sure I sound...

    Hauling cattle across state lines

Wasn't sure which section to put this in. Never really gave it much thought in the past, but is there any special requirements to haul your own cattle across state lines? I have been thinking of making a sale in OKC, but I have no idea if you have to have any special paperwork or permits to...

    Just stopping in

Wow! I haven't realized how long its been since I've been on this site. I was doing some research on the ole Google, and actually pulled up an old post that I had posted way back in '09.... Looking back between '09 and now, I have had a lot of things change in my life. Divorce, re-marriage...

    Rye grass for hay

Was talking to my neighbor Sunday while burning some brush piles ( finaly able to burn after 2 years of dry weather) and was entertaining the idea of him cutting my place (around 15 acres) in the spring for hay. It usually comes up about 1/4 rye and whatever native stuff. I told him that he...

    kenny chesney

Depends on if you like his music. Seen him way back when he and Tim Mcgraw was traveling with George Strait. Big arena, bad seats, but all in all was a good show.

    Trailer rental

What is the going rate for renting cattle trailers? What would you pay to rent one? What would you charge someone to rent from you? It would be locally and probably no longer than a week. What size of deposit should be expected?

    Random thought

My day job usually requires a lot of driving and consequently I have a lot of "thinking" time. I have had one thought that popped up last week and I am curious to find an answer. So if you own land in a different county than you live in, do you get to vote for that commissioner for that...

    Starting Over

Well, Im officially back in the cattle biz, so to speak. Finally had a chance to go to the sale barn and picked up a nice little heifer and steer. Mainly got them to clean up some grass that the sheep won't eat. Sure is nice to see calves out in the pastures again.

    Farmers Market Pricing

I'm curious as to what kind of prices yall are seeing at the farmer's markets this year? We have tried to stay the same as last year, but some items have gone up, especially with little rain so far this year.

    Grub worms

Does anyone know how to rid a garden of these absolutely aggrevating little be nice's? I have been digging potatoes, and have found that almost a quarter of my crop has been enjoyed by these things. Do they even serve a purpose? Why do they have to eat all the good ones? Is there a...

    Shredder help

Long story short I ran over some metal in a field and have managed to "mess up" the blade pan. The book says that the shaft that holds the pan is tapered and to tap around the shaft to loosen it. I have tapped, beat, pryed and cussed it and it won't budge. Does anyone know a trick or a way...

    Spring has to be close!

Went and checked the 'taters and onions today and found about 10 or so tater sprouts coming up. Onions are still looking good too. Gonna be planting beans and peas within the next week or so, as soon as it dries up a bit.

    What would you choose?

The goal is to create a commercial herd of around 90-100 head of cows. Looking for most productive option. So, what would you choose? Bred heifers or older bred cow/calf pairs? Any reason one is better than the other?

    Price differences

I hear alot about how it is easier to market truckload lots of calves. What kind of price difference per head do you normaly see between selling a truckload vs individual i.e. auction barn. What other benefits are there to selling truckload lots? Also what weights to feedyards target to start...

    Bird Huntin'

A lawyer was pheasant hunting and he shot and dropped a bird. It fell into a cattle pasture on the other side of the fence. As the lawyer climbed over the fence, an elderly cattle rancher drove up and asked the lawyer what he was doing. The lawyer responded, "What the Hell does it look like...

    Decisions, decisions

A prosperous cattle buyer decided he needed to settle down. He had three girlfriends, but couldn't decide which one to marry. He decided to give each of his girlfriends $2,000 and see how they spend the money. The first one went out and got a total makeover with the money. She bought new...

    New Pasture Seeding info

I am planning on planting a new pasture in Bermuda grass this coming spring. Will it be ok to sling both bermuda and rye at the same time or should I wait and plant rye grass in the fall? Should I wait a year or two for it to establish before planting rye for the winter? Also, what kind of...
