    Feed ration

Weighed them on and off. And you have to understand it was only for 21 days. Those gains were experienced every time I fed it. That being said, I only fed the Pre-Con to my registered calves that were mostly from AI sires. I fed the cheaper MFA Cattle Charge to the commercial calves. It's...

    Feed ration

Before it got so high I fed newly weaned calves Purina Pre-Con. You could order it in bulk blended with Bovatec or Rumensin. Or with AS-700. But not both the growth stimulant and the anti-viral medication. Fed at about 2% of body weight per head per day I was getting average daily gains...

    Soy hulls

Why were soyhulls so high? $8 corn and $15 soybeans are the answer. All feeds are based off of the corn price. Hulls will be coming down this fall after harvest starts. Big crop = low commodity prices = lower grain by-product prices. Today in the KC area corn is in the $3.25 range and...

    Soy hulls

Have fed whole soybeans before, but not more that one pound per head and only to mature cattle. Regarding rice byproduct feeds. Your info is the exact opposite of mine. For years truckers hauled corn south from southwestern Iowa and northern Missouri to poultry and dairy farms in Arkansas...

    Soy hulls

Roasted soybeans? Are those soybeans with the oil cooked out of them? If so, you were essentially feeding soybean meal. Better check prices on those in your area. And I would leave the rice bran out of your cattle rations. I know it is readily available in the south, but it is detrimental...

    Army worms-------Help a rookie

Sorry to hear your University Extension office was no help. You might want to check the Univ. of Kentucky Ext. agronomy website for insecticide recommendations and such. Most of the insecticides mentioned above are synthetic pyrethroid class materials. They are generally low in toxicity and...

    Soy hulls

I have quite a lot of experience feeding soyhull pellets. I avoid using meal. We are located near two soybean processing terminals, so availability is good. However, the price for the hulls has gone up like everything else. Looks like I will be paying from $120 to $140 per ton this fall. We...

First Experience with AI a total fail. Need a better way

I only buy 50 straws a year or so from my Genex man and he comes by and fills my semen tank periodically for no charge. I also buy my misc. AI supplies from him.

    Consumers want to know

I don't care what people like. But if they try to tell me how much better grass fed organic sustainable beef is than my grass raised and grain finished beef, I have no respect for their judgement. They are ignorant ill-informed trend followers.

    S U V Decision

Don't know what a crossover is, but I love my Suburban. Well, both of them. Still have the 2004, first one we bought and have converted it to 100% farm use. Have a near new one, an LTZ with all the extras and we love it.

For you guys that have used Sudax for hay..

Tried this once when I was a kid. Bad idea. You should have green chopped only enough to feed daily or chop it in one cutting and ensile it in a silage pit. It will take forever to dry enough to bale and you likely won't be happy with the bales after they rot away.

First Experience with AI a total fail. Need a better way

Man, I hate to be the downer ITT, especially when it comes to educating newbs. But why do you only have five cows, no bull and are trying to AI? If you are willing to purchase a semen tank (Maybe I should ask. Do you have a semen tank to properly store the semen?), semen and spend the money...

    Consistent Maternal Attitudes ?

I have experienced this, as well. Sometimes coyotes or deer running through the pasture will get a herd excited for the day. Once a few years back a mountain lion got in and chased the cows in our home pasture. I assume the ML was a young stray male, because one is rarely spotted in NWMo. He...

    Consistent Maternal Attitudes ?

I try to keep heifers out of successful dam lines and use bulls known for positive dispositions. That means growthy heifers often get culled and less impressive heifers sometimes are retained. However, best laid plans do not always come to fruition. I have seen heifers walk away from their...

    Consistent Maternal Attitudes ?

Think I used the term "temperament". My 50 years of experience indicates temperament impacts mothering ability directly. Although I have seen mean or flighty cows perform/produce well enough to stay in the herd, their disposition is often passed on to their offspring where it impacts feed lot...
