    Grand Canyon Pics

We just returned from one of the few vacations we have taken. We took the kids and hiked down to the Havasupai Indian Village and it was an awesome trip. There is no access to this village unless you go down the trail on foot or horse (or mule) or take a helicopter in. When the kids made the...

how full is her bag? My First of Everything

Speaking from our experience here you are going to be watching and listening to every little grunt and groan and stretch and think, "Now she's ready." We still do the midnight flashlight runs just because it's exciting. The vet you spoke to seems to be giving you information that isn't really...

    2nd twin takes how long?

One of us was watching her full time. I almost wish she had a twin which would explain the sort of wierd placenta situation. I've never seen one break off like that. Can't explain the hoof thing I saw though. I guess I will blame it on being too far away for a crystal clear view and...

    2nd twin takes how long?

Well the good news is I didn't feel anything. She hasn't lost all her whole placenta yet but somehow tore most of it off. I'll have to check the weight on this calf. I guess I'll take one little calf over troublesome twins.

    2nd twin takes how long?

Hey everybody, I usually just read and try to learn from each post but I could use some help today. Cow calved this a.m. around 7:30. It is now 10:00 a.m. She is still passing amniotic fluid and has a few contractions. I am 99% sure I saw a hoof during one of those contractions and her first...

Gonna get some Ice, need advice

I have used ashes on ice here very successfully. If you have access to any wood ash, just sprinkle it around on the icy area and it gives great traction. Not so great on your front step though, it tracks in lots of black.

    Raised bumps under skin

Any chance it's a reaction to the pour-on? The timing is a little long for it but maybe if the dilution was off their skin could show those welts.

    Trouble tubing 3 wk. calf

Cheyenne - 2 gallons at one time? Wow. I am using an All Milk 20 replacer and she is not scouring. Not sure what else I can do for her.

    Trouble tubing 3 wk. calf

We will be seperating the cow and calf from the rest soon and I will be able to see if the cow has enough milk or not. Her ears are not droopy, her temp is fine and she is not hunched or anything. She is just not real active. Every time I tubed her, she urinated so I know that much is working...

    Trouble tubing 3 wk. calf

Thank you Milkmaid! I was hoping I'd hear your expertise. I tried the bottle and a bucket several times. Finally gave into tubing when the mosquitos were going to carry me away. So would you have given her the replacer anyway when the juices were flowing out? I worried about overfilling...

    Trouble tubing 3 wk. calf

We have a 3 wk. old heifer that is looking very gaunt and we decided to supplement her with replacer we had here. The cow has cancer eye and either isn't producing enough milk or we have also seen her allow other calves to nurse and hers isn't getting enough. Either way, we will be seperating...

While I'm waiting on the vet's call

Here's what we found. Vet doesn't know where the infection is coming from, but 4-5 mo. fetus is alive. He didn't find any burst abcess or anything else. Gave long acting pen. and said watch her. Also looked at another 5 yr old cow. Without sending tests in not 100% sure but looks like...

While I'm waiting on the vet's call

He did call back and hopefully he can get out here today. I am going to move some panels and hopefully the chute so we have better working facilities. I'll post when I know more. Thanks for the help.

While I'm waiting on the vet's call

I have a 5yr Hereford cow due May-June that has a glob of white/cream colored infection on her tail from her vulva. Is this a possible uterine infection and what am I looking at as far as treatment? How does this affect the calf?

    3 of my angus Cows

This should probably be on the beginner board but can someone please post a picture or give a good explanation of exactly where the hooks and pins are? I am beginning to look for depth, etc. and am still having a hard time grasping exactly what an ideal rear half should look like. I think I...

    New Calves

Sherril, I'm mostly a beginner myself but I can try to help a little. If you think the calves aren't staying warm enough, make sure they have a place where they can curl into a pile of any kind of bedding. Straw, hay, corn stalks, anything to help them conserve heat and energy. You can make...

    Brood cow (pic)

Jake, I'm pretty new at this game and have lots to learn. I read just about every post and always find them interesting and helpful (usually :) ) Can you explain what you see that indicates she may be a hard keeper?

    premature calf?

I see I left out a few details. Yes, we were there for the birth from the time the water sack started showing. We were not expecting a calf this early so we walked the cow into a portable shed and bedded it down. The calf started showing only it's head so we found the feet and helped out...
