That reminds me of a caller to a local radio want ads, in a small county next to ours called Tradio on the Radio. Somebody called in with an air conditioner to sell, said it didn't work but was a good air conditioner.
A lot of those generators are easy fixes. Probably a capacitor or something, and sometimes they need to be manually excited by spinning a drill with it running.
Generator engines usually have a tapered crankshaft too, can make it a little tricky to repurpose them.
