When checking cattle this morning, found some runny white poop on ground, then found 3 month old calf with it smeared all over his butt. Never seen this from a calf over a few days old, so don't know what is happening. Calf seems to feel fine so not overly concerned at this point but want to cover the bases if possible.

Any ideas what may be the situation and what, if anything needs to be done. Thanks for your input.

Silvery white would be scours probably caused by rich milk. Just keep an eye on the calf and watch for signs of stress or dehydration or illness

What is the calf and the cow eating? A grain ration (or really good quality feed, rare this time of year) Is most likely as was said, milk scours. You can treat it (and treat it and treat it, ad ad finium) and it will get over it by itself or if you cut the cows hot ration down that will get rid of it. Highly palatable forage for the calf will also cut it down, as long as the cow doesn;t get the same thing.

Just checked them right before dark and calf was up eating silage. His rearend looked good and he seemed to be feeling fine. For further clarification, these cows/calves primary nutrition comes from dairy corn silage waste/pulloff fed free choice. Due to the inconsistent amounts of silage received they are turned out into pasture or a hay lot as needed, until more silage is received. In this case silage was received on Monday and due to impending rain, cows were turned into a strip of fresh grass Tuesday while a fair amount of silage was still in front of them. By Thursday morning, grass was getting short and old silage was gone, but more silage was available and brought in. Both the cows and calves have access to the silage and the calves start nibbling on it when a few weeks old. Wondering if calf in question might have overindulged on silage Thursday and Friday resulting in the runny white poop. He seems to be feeling/doing fine, but will keep an eye on him. Just have never seen this type poop on calves that are over a few days old and it concerned me.

Thanks for all the feedback.

Mama probably gorged on green grass and corn silage and produced more milk and calf tried to drink it all....end result...squirts.
