I let the kids go fishing at lunch today, and they sent me this. I'm gonna be mad at myself, if it's a common fish. It doesn't look like a crappie to me.

SPECK

Also known as Speckled Perch

lol...yep, my grandparents called them white perch as well, I learned later they are usually referred to as crappie...

Folks in my part of Texas call it a crappie. A "speck" is something completely different. In Texas a "speck" is a salt water game fish. The scientific name for a "speck" is spotted weakfish. Both crappie and specks are really good eating and put up a pretty good fight when caught.

I guess it's the way it's turned, it looks thin as a rope to me. No doubt it's a crappie looking at it on an iPad.

Now I'm confused.

Yup Crappie is a tasty fresh water fish similar to a Perch.

"Speck" is a salt water Speckled Trout. They are also very tasty and fun to catch.
