ok you wanted honesty so here is it. they both seem to have funnel butts. some better pics would help to determine that. i think it wouldnt hurt to have the feed pumped up to them. help them fill out a little bit more. other then that theres nothin great about them, but nothin that terribly bad.

Thanks it is my first year. What are funnel butts? I feed them a 5 gallon bucket twice a day. More? Should I feed them more? My dad says I should. I will take more pics next time I get them out to handly them...And then try to post them.

AAOK had a ration, you might PM him and ask for it. The steers need to be eating about 2-3% of their body weight.

Here's a nice place to get an estimate of your steers' weight:

Are they halter broke? When's your fair? I like Thunder a little better than Fred.

Since it's your first year in 4-H try to learn ALOT, which Im sure you already have. Oh yeah, have fun too!

funnel butt means they have no butt. those steers butts should be round and big and muscley. what are you feeding them. and what breeds are they?

Look guys it his first year give him some time. The calves don't look all that bad. I think the one with the most white is the better of the two but it would help if you would ty them up and take pic's of there butt's, Top's side profile and fronts and set them up if you can and have someone take pic's that way. But I bet if you work your a$$ off with them they will be very good for your first year. Don't have it set in your mind that your going to walk out in the ring and get grand but just set back and show your best an take what you get. The most part about first year calves is what you learn not how you do, that's just an added bonus. Plus if you do not make the sale, there's most of the time people who will buy them just because they wont to help you out and they need frozer meat, but if theres not put them in your own frozer. But take some better pic's of them its hard to really see them like that unless your there yourself looking at them walk around, but I bet there good first year claves. Good luck.

They are hereford cross, I am feeding them 20% all stock feed because it is affordable for me.

When do they have to be ready, they still look a little green.
Green? My fair is Jul;y 16-21.

When people say GREEN I automatically think of a banana. Most stores carry green bananas. So when mom brings home some bananas and I see they are green, I wait a couple days for them to get ripe and turn yellow. Then I know they are ready to eat. You can eat a green banana and you can show a green calf, but they won't taste/show as well.

Just how I look at it :D

Do you think that it would help if I open them into a bigger pasture? Right now they are in a...acre pasture And I would be putting them into a 15-20 acre pasture. I will try to get pics tomorrow when I have them out.

I am bad at guessing weights especially from pics, but I think these calves need a bunch more weight on them. They look like some good calves that might have been raised on the farm, but I do not think there is any purple there even with more weight.

To maximize their potential, do not put on larger pasture, keep them cool and get them to eat all they will eat. Make sure you have wormed them and then feed them all the feed (good ration) that they will eat, give them just a little hay to keep digestion working and poor the feed to them.

Feed will not replace genetics but it will help them be all they can be. But at best you might get 90 to 120 lbs on them. I think I would like to see 200 + on them.

Have fun, look at the kind of steers that win this year and it will help you in picking next years steers.

Purple? What? They weight 900+. They were raised on the farm. I this my first year so I really didnt get to pick which ones I wanted. They were born right here on our farm. That is what I said to my dad "dont give them any hay, just feed, but he put another round bale in last night. ( we dont do square bale buit we are going to do some this year). He is just want to give them hay because of the price of feed. But I want them to weigh more, so...just give them feed and little hay?
Thanks Justin

I don't think that 900lbs is enough to 'make weight' at most fairs. To me it looks like they need fat. Don't put them in any bigger of a pasture. In fact, i would proabably bring them in into a smaller pen, but that's just me. Cattle should be eating at least 2 if not 3% of their body weight. So that means that a 900 lb calf should be eating at least 18 lbs of grain/day.

Good Luck :D
