all you flatlanders!!!

Here's one of our local roads.. GEAR DOWN!

It aint steep till crap starts coming off the dash.
coming up that hill stuff does come off the dash... it's all washboard and there's a switchback every half mile.. I think you drop like 4000 ft in the course of a couple miles

Ford guy here also, but I drive Ram trucks after owning a 6.0. Do you have the relay jumped to keep the glow plugs on longer? My 92 Ford won't start if it's not plugged in below freezing.

No, that is one cycle using the stock relay. If everything is working correctly (glow plugs/relay/good batteries/good starter) it should start at any temperature. Sounds like you may have a relay/glow plug problem. Always go with motorcraft glow plugs. I run Rotella T6 full synthetic oil in everything, that helps because the oil is not so heavy at low temps.

Here's my truck at -24C (-12F or so?), single battery, still running 10W40 oil

Not in my experience.

I've owned a dozen or more 6.9's and 7.3's, some from brand new. Never had one start worth a d*mn below 10F without being plugged in. I usually start plugging them in around 20F or so. And that's when all of the systems you mentioned were functioning properly, with good parts.

Where do you live?

Here's another, just because picking on the fords doesn't seem to get old

Towards the end of that video, the red one actually gels up. I didn't have enough fuel treatment in it. I drive the 6.9 everyday in the winter time and never plug it in.
