Senate passes bill to keep cattle tags secret

The state Senate yesterday passed a bill to make information stored on electronic cattle tags exempt from state public records laws.

The Senate voted 27-0 to pass the cattle tag bill sponsored by Sen. Jerry Cooper, D-Smartt. The bill had been amended to close only information also kept secret by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The bill differs from another agricultural records bill passed earlier by the Senate but killed in a House committee this week.

That measure, sponsored by Sen. Charlotte Burks, D-Monterey, would have allowed state agriculture officials to divulge that a diseased animal had been detected but would have kept secret the owner of the livestock, the name of the veterinarian and the location of the farm.

Rep. Rob Briley led the charge against the animal testing measure. The bill's sponsor, Sen. Thelma Harper, D-Nashville, asked to delay a Senate vote for two weeks.
