Strengths: good dispositions, adequate milk, good marbling, good mama cows

Weaknesses: too fat of carcasses, don't grow as quick as many other breeds

I guess there weaknesses are somewhat related to their strengths. Due to their milking ability, it is hard to maintain flesh on the females. I think the biggest thing that is not good about Shorthorns is their diverse color patterns. If they were solid colored, they would definitely be more acceptable to the commercial people. A lot of the cattle that are considered Shorthorns today came up through the appendix program and have some outside blood in them. This has hurt the consistency in the cattle some but has also produced some great outcross cattle for Shorthorn breeders to use.
