I see a few beef calves come through the auction ring with very narrow heads - - almost like a sheep. Any thoughts on the cause or the effect on gain?

These calves are not thick #1s but do look normal in other respects.

Steve,
I think I know the kind you speak of. I have had some that fed
"ok" and some that wouldn't grow period. They have a nose that looks like they could drink out of a pop bottle. The ones I see are always finer boned, than thier mates. There seems to be different degrees of this defect. With the really bad ones being pretty much worthless, and then some actually being alright other than a freaky head. I deal in plain cattle, but I pass on most of these. I won't speculate on the cause, other than they are born like that? We call em' freaks, and say it with a grin!
