Compared to black steers of the same general weight, type and quality:
bulls off $3
heifers off $1
reds and white/brockle face same as black steers
Obvious dairy influence $6 off
white and yellow $6 off
Branvieh $20 off

But pigs were cheap to day too

Any particular reason the braunvieh are hammered so bad?

Because they can be. It used to be claimed that they were mistaken for Jerseys. These guys might have been mistaken for funny colored charolais but surely not Jerseys. They were some of the best muscled, chunkiest calves that went through the sale.

It appears the braunvieh example is typical of a rotating discounting process. It seems that changes periodically by breed/animal makeup....... and occurs without logical reasoning.

At times a short tail...stub ears...from freezing....or some other minor condition..on a good animal... is used for discount. This even includes the black/red hided motley faced animal which always garners top dollar at the sales around here.

We sell our production thru a local co-operative directly to a finisher and those experiences are avoided.

Braunviehs that i have sold at auction have always been discounted compared to other like weight "right colored" calves.

But compared to "right colored" calves the same age, we are actually getting a premium due to increased pounds sold. Doesn't always work because of market demands, but it did last week. looking at things in a different perspective sometimes helps you sleep better at night.
