PENNINGTON GAP, Va.—Injuries have been reported as a result of an incident at the U.S. prison in Lee County, Virginia.
According to the Lee County Sheriff's Office, the prison requested as many rescue squad units as possible due to injuries. Several law enforcement agencies, including the Sheriff's Office and Virginia State Police, were also dispatched to the scene.
There's no word on the number of total injuries or whether those injured were prisoners or staff members. What caused the injuries has not been confirmed, although it has been reported to be a fight.
Wellmont Health System spokesman Jim Wozniak said there are six patients from the prison at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport, Tennessee. The conditions of those patients was not available, Wozniak said.
A Mountain States Health Alliance spokesperson said none of its hospitals have received patients from the incident.
VSP spokeswoman Corinne Geller confirmed troopers were called to the facility to assist with traffic and exterior perimeter security.
A nearby resident said on Twitter that there were helicopters, ambulances and police at the scene, which is located at the Lee County Industrial Park.
The resident also said they heard a "loud boom" around 6:15 p.m.
The prison is a high security facility with more than 1,600 inmates, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. There is a also an adjacent minimum security camp at the prison.
