She was with the neighbor's cows on a big meadow. There was 2 miles of timber, windfall, brush and a 30 year old cut block between there and our meadow. What kind of cover was she trying to winter in?
Most every year. This one accounted for all cows turned out. Predators accounted for 22 calves. We are still out four bulls. Is there ever a year when you don't find them all?
He weighed 625 lbs at the sale today. He would have been near 700 when we left home this morning.Great pics and a monster calf. Thanks for sharing.
Is that a typical year to lose that many calves to predators? What all predators are in your area? That momma raised a heck of a calf. Glad you were able to find them. Most every year. This one accounted for all cows turned out. Predators accounted for 22 calves. We are still out four bulls.
Previous to 2003 it was rare to lose one. Wolves and grizzlies and the odd black black bear have been getting more numerous since then. We remove lots legally but not many do.Is that a typical year to lose that many calves to predators? What all predators are in your area? That momma raised a heck of a calf. Wow. That's a lot. I hate to hear that. Not much you can do if the other folks aren't helping remove some of them too though. Y'all have my respect raising cattle in the environment you do with all those things factoring in to try to protect your herds from.Previous to 2003 it was rare to lose one. From spring 2003 to present, we are short 477 cattle off range.
Friends of ours had 11 of them pack of 7 wolves killed the whole works over the course of a summer.Have you considered bringing in Livestock Guardian dogs? You would have to run at least 5 or more in a group to protect against a wolf pack, not to mention grizzlies and cougar.
Just checked the calving records. He was born April 29.He weighed 625 lbs at the sale today. He would have been near 700 when we left home this morning.
Hah. Too funny. Most of our fields are named after people in-laws family bought out.If my wife's book is right this old rip and her baby are the last pair to find. Still four bulls out somewhere.
The quad got a few more bruises to today in the thick stuff. No inclination to take photos until we got to C2 Meadow.View attachment 10154View attachment 10155View attachment 10156View attachment 10157
