Last one…… we think….

Help Support CattleToday:

What kind of cover was she trying to winter in?
She was with the neighbor's cows on a big meadow. There was 2 miles of timber, windfall, brush and a 30 year old cut block between there and our meadow.
With a nice road that we crossed several times……….

Most every year. This one accounted for all cows turned out. Predators accounted for 22 calves. We are still out four bulls.
Is that a typical year to lose that many calves to predators? What all predators are in your area? That momma raised a heck of a calf. Glad you were able to find them.

Previous to 2003 it was rare to lose one. Wolves and grizzlies and the odd black black bear have been getting more numerous since then. We remove lots legally but not many do.
From spring 2003 to present, we are short 477 cattle off range.

Wow. That's a lot. I hate to hear that. Not much you can do if the other folks aren't helping remove some of them too though. Y'all have my respect raising cattle in the environment you do with all those things factoring in to try to protect your herds from.

Have you considered bringing in Livestock Guardian dogs? You would have to run at least 5 or more in a group to protect against a wolf pack, not to mention grizzlies and cougar.
