Help Support CattleToday:

Bruce Knight, the USDA undersecretary in charge of NAIS, stated early this year that NAIS was voluntary, and that there were no longer any plans to make it mandatory..

When asked for a gaurantee, he cited the criticism USDA received from producers over the plan and simply said it wasn't likely to ever be made mandatory. In other words, nobody in office anywhere wants to fall on the NAIS sword.

A voluntary NAIS is a dead NAIS, so far as I'm concerned.

Frankly, I couldn't be happier.

I wouldn't say the mandatory is dead. We learned at the state fair that anybody showing livestock next year at county, local, and the state fair must put their premise number on their entry.

Manatory at the federal level. The feds will just encourage the states to make it mandatory on a state by state basis.
