I have six calves (3 steer and 3 heifer calfs) that were born in february that I am thinking about weaning early. They are completely draining mommas and my thought is i can supplement them easier than i can the mommas. My question is if I want to possibly keep the heifers for replacements am I hurting their growth??

If thrir mommas are getting sucked own that badly, you may be hurting their growth by NOT weaning them

What do their mamas bags look like? Are they still producing enough milk? Pictures of the cows would help but it's normal for most cows to loose weight nursing a calf. If it's a lot of weight when calves are only 4 to 5 months old it's not good. The heifers would be fine and grow on feed and grass but you may not want to keep heifers out of cows that can't raise a calf to seven months old without falling apart. There are other variables though. If your cows are lacking in groceries, which this time of year should just be plenty of good grass, that could be the problem.
