Klaus Birkel was born and raised near Stuttgart, a highly industrialized area of southern Germany. In 1874, the family had established a small milling and flour food business. From those humble beginnings, by the 1980's, the family business grew into the third largest pasta company worldwide. After his formal education, in 1971, Birkel joined the family business. He became a managing director in 1978 with the responsibility of marketing and sales.
In 1981, Birkel was named CEO of the B. Birkel & Sohne GmbH. Under his leadership the company grew from a pasta producer to a diversified food company with distribution throughout Europe. Revenues grew from DM190 million to DM450 million per year. In 1983 the company received the highest award given in the German food business, "Der Goldene Zuckerhut", for outstanding growth and expansion. The family sold the company in 1989 to BSN-Danone, a French food company, with major interests in beer, dairy, pasta and water.
Looking for new investments, in 1991, Klaus Birkel began activities in Texas and Florida, focusing on the areas of real estate and agriculture. He purchased Camp Cooley Ranch and successfully guided its "quest for excellence" as it became one of the leading seedstock producers in the cattle business with a philosophy of forward-thinking customer service, focusing on helping the smaller and mid-sized cattle operations to improve their profitability. In addition, the goal is to breed for genetically superior cattle that meet the quality and profitability demands of the cattle industry as well as satisfying the consumer.
Ultimate Genetics, a service company for cattle reproduction, was established in 1996. It has grown to one of the leading embryo transfer and custom bull semen collecting facilities in the United States. The company specializes in Brahman-influenced cattle and ships all over the world. From the time the world's first cloned calves were born at Ultimate Genetics, the company has sought to constantly provide the livestock industry with customer serviced based leading-edge technology.
In addition to the agricultural activities, a real estate development company, Birkel International Partners Ltd, was established in 1994, in Bryan, Texas. The company targeted primarily the multi-family garden-style apartment markets. This company has evolved and is currently expanding its areas of interest to include condominium and diversified use properties. It recently transferred its offices to Dallas, Texas and has changed its name to Birkel Residential Group, Ltd.
All business activities of Klaus Birkel and his family are managed under the parent company, Birkel Investment Holdings.
