Herofan if understand you right you teach kids with special needs and if that's right I really respect you for that. Honestly, truthfully do. And i think alot of you because of what you said about finding good in every kid regardless of any faults they might have. Thats something to be very proud of.

ALL kids regardless of any faults, learning disabilities, hyper active, slow whatever they may have going on is no fault of theirs.

Had a X brother in law who worked for a private corporation that provided something I would describe as assisted living. His job was to live at a house with about 6 men that had some type of mental handy caps. He referred to them as clients. They ranged in age from 30 to 40 years old. But had the mental capacity of maybe a 10 year old.

He was more like a Mother to them than anything. He would take them for doctors appointments, teach them small task like how to load the dish washer, fold their clothes, some worked as door greeters at Sam's club.

My point is they are all kinds of kids, all different, all have different needs when it comes to learning.

The way it is for 90 % of the kids going to public schools work like this. Build a big ware house, fill it with cubicles, call thoes cubicles class rooms. Hire one teacher per hundred head of kids. Even though that is WAY too many kids for anyone person to try and take care of let alone try and teach that many. Call the ware house fully staffed. Buy a fleet of busses to truck the kids to and from that warehouse our government calls a school. The way we haul cattle to a sale barn. And exspect our kids to love it ? That's bull **** It's worse than child abuse. Our government knows what's going on and let's it continue. If it was a different kind of negelect they would at least refer to it as child abuse.

Absolutely not !!! I know you don't beleave me but I am not down on Cracker barrel or the cashier's who made the mistakes giving money back too me.

And i am not blaming teachers for what's happening with so many kids not learning even the basics in school either.
I know I said I wasn't down on Cracker barrel but it's just that the last time i went to one a week ago. One that i have went to alot of times over the years wasn't nothing like it use to be in the past. I ordered the meat loaf with sweet tea. The whole meal was cold when it was brought out. Meat loaf was raw in the middle. The tea was warm, had very little ice. The items they display on the walls were covered in dust. It was almost as warm inside as it was outside. My waitress done a very good job serving me. The young lady who sits you at a table stayed on her cellphone so long that i walked on in and was going to find a table myself. Heard her tell whoever she was talking to she would call them back later.

Floors in both the restraunt and gift shop were bad dirty. Bathroom was filthy.

Paid 15$ for that and didn't eat nothing they served me drink maybe half a glass of the Luke warm tea. I was thirsty or wouldn't have drink that much.

Was worth the $ 15 to know not to go back there.

26 years completed. I plan to retire in two.
Well congratulations herofan !!! Let me tell you a story and what i plan to do hopefully sometime soon.

My first day of kindergarten my Mother took me to school. My teachers name was Miss Yates. I lived across the high way 4 block's from the school.

I was 6 years old outside of my younger brother and baby sister had never played or had interaction with any other kids.

So even though it was a very small school, maybe 200 kids of you were to combine kindergarten, through high school. Probably wasn't a dozen if us kindergarten kids enrolled that morning.

After having said our pled of allegiance to the flag. Had our orange juice, milk and cookies. We were taken outside for recess. I liked the milk and cookies and all, pled of allegiance to the flag was a little confusing.

But all these kid's ? Well I didn't know what to make of all of that !!! Don't know what I was thinking but after Miss Yates turned her back at the play ground. I decided this kindergarten stuff wasn't for me !

So i turned and started heading for home. Of course I was walking at first until Miss Yates saw me and started telling me to come back and asking where was I going ?

Well I guess because i didn't come back or answer her she began walking faster and the tone in her voice got more serious and louder.

Of course I started walking faster too ! That quickly turned into running on both our parts. Might have been little but was like a baby calf I was fast.

Didn't know until years latter that the main reason she chased me for that first city block was because she was afraid I would get ran over crossing the high way.

But I was home free after that. She had ran out of wind at that point. Ran the other 3 blocks home. When i walked in the door the look on my Mother's face looked like she had seen a ghost !!!

She immediately asked how i got home and why. Other than her seemingly not tending to beleave my story. Seemed kind of be stunned at my story !!!

I simply explained I was feeling good and the teacher sent me home !!!

It was about that i heard a car door slam, then a knock on the door. Guess who that was ? Old party pooper herself Miss Yates, she ruined everything got me a whooping from my moma, then yhanked up by Miss Yates who by the way was about to have a heart attack from breathing so hard from trying to chase me down.

She took me back to school. Give me a paddling. Made me stand with my nose in the corner !!!

I would call all that child abuse ! Wouldn't you ? Little did I know that would be remembered by all my classmates, Miss Yates and everyone else who heard about it. Was and still do get teased about it and I am 60 years old now.

Miss Yates is now 83. I plan on personally going and thanking her somehow for somethings I will tell you about latter. Phone battery is dead now.

For the rest of the story Lol !!! Miss Yates advance through school about as fast as I did. Guess who moved from a kindergarten teacher to teaching 1st and 2nd grade ? You Guessed my favorite teacher in whole wide world ! Miss Yates !!! By the time I got to the third grade I had stood in the coroner so many times and wrote so many sencentnes for talking class and other things my nose got pointy and could didn't need chalk to write on the chalk board. I had used so much chalk. My finger nails was full of it. No need for a stick of chalk!!!

Little did I know at the time but all that mishtif I was doing that Miss Yates didn't like was garuanteeing me my own pravite tutor through school. Why that little woman took special interest in me. All through 2nd and 3rd grade while all the other kids would go out for recess, guess where i was ? You guessed it. Miss Yates had me doing more school work.

I was so happy when i got in the 4th grade and away from miss Yates Until my first day I met my new teacher Miss Shin !!! Why it was like dazchivoo !!!

Can't remember what brought it on again but the foot race to home was on again ! Only difference Miss Shin got in her car. Had caught up with me with paddle in hand right after i crossed the high way !!!

She give me my first lesson in how scycologie works. She talked in a low tone voice held that paddle behind her back sort of to hide it. Telling me to get in the car.

Miss Shin was a sharp dressor, always wore a dress, panty hose, hill shoes . Well had been raining that day. She had me cornered in a yard that had this big bush in it. Me on one side, her on the Other. She would go one, Me the other until she made a grab for me and slipped. Her flat of her back, both shoes slung off. Paddle thrown across the yard.

Miss Shins eye's were glowing red. If possible she would have snorted smoke out of her nose. I might have little but I knew she was mad. Slip and fell again getting up. Had mud all up to her shoulders, tore her panty hose all up.

Decided it was time for me to scoot !!! Made the last 3 blocks home, mom ask me why i was home. Had no choice but tell the truth. " Mom I said. I got sick at school and Miss Shin sent me home ! "

Mom swallowed it hook line and sinker. Made me a blanket in the floor in front of the fan. As she went to get me some aspirin and sprite. Dazageivoo!!! All over again.

Knock on the door, Miss Shin is standing there looking like she had mugged ! Mom didn't just whoop me that time. She beat me like a rented mule.

Miss Shin throwed me in the back of her car worse that a trooper would throw a convict into the back of a cop car !!!

Even the principal gave me a whooping. !!! When i was growing up child abuse like that wasn't discouraged, it was encouraged !!!

Little did I know that had just insured me getting the VERY best education possible. Because miss Shin to over where Miss Yates left off. Just another reason for my pointed nose. But man can I write pretty on a chalk board and to think i owe it all to thoes sweet little lady's !!!

If you're ever back in Kansas near Mulvane, my nephew went to the Kansas Star Casino last night and posted this pic: Epic cheese sticks!!! 1.5 lbs of cheese in each stick (log?) and 18" long. That is my version of Heaven on Earth!!!!View attachment 5810

Very interesting experience. Coincidentally, my first grade teacher's name was Miss Yates too. I lost track, but I'd say she's closing in on 100 by now.

How about that !!! My Miss Yates is 83 now. Her son and I are good friends, grew up together.

She ended up teaching math in high school so I had her for a few more years there too. She was pretty much all business when it came to teaching. I will be honest and tell you I didn't like her that well back then either.

The only reason i didn't like her was because she done her job as a teacher and more. The easy thing for her would have been to let me slide through school with grades like C & D.

Had a English teacher who all of her students liked her. Most everyone in her class made A and B. About all you had to do was attend her class. Didn't learn much but, got good grades in english.

Miss Yates was sturn but fair. She was very well respected by her students. If it were not for her putting forth the extra effort and work to straighten me out as a kid. I wouldn't have had as good of a life as i have been fortunate enough to have had.

I plan on going to see her and thanking her for all she has done. Would like to give her some kind of token to show her my appreciation too. Haven't thought of what yet . A simple thank you just doesn't seem like much of a thank you.

She was more of a math teacher than anything else. I have 6 siblings all who graduated college. 2 are computer programmers, 1 has a degree in forestry, 1 is a high school teacher, 1 has a degree in business and 1 is now a retired nuclear engineer.

I am the black sheep of the family. They all graduated college with degrees to show for it. They chose thoes careers because that according to them was what they felt they would enjoy doing to make their living.

For me I looked at things differently I guess. I felt the more money I could make the happier I would be. Didn't really know how I was going to accomplish that at the time.

So i kind of evaluated the situation a little. Took notice of how well my siblings were doing in their career choices. Knew I was 10 times smarter than any of them. So oldest brother at the time was making the most having completed a trade school in electronics.

So i done the same thing. He went to work at neculer plants across the U.S and went to college becoming a neculer engineer.

I didn't do that but ended up with a career very similiar making about what he makes money wise.

Most of the work i have done and do now has required alot of mathematics. That's another reason if it hadn't of been for Miss Yates having had been there and lined me out by seeing that I started off in life with a solid foundation of the basic building blocks they are used in order to learn on my own. I hate to think of what kind of life I would have lived.

If you are on I-20 in Texas stop at the Red Star in Eastland, between DFW and Abilene. Good home cooking in a new, clean truckstop.

A bit further east, in Strawn, a few miles off the interstate, is Mary's Cafe. Consistently mentioned as the best chicken-fried steak in Texas. I can truly say that it is the best I have ever had.

I spent 2 weeks in Eastland in 2018. I do remember eating a couple times at the Stockyard.

Have you tried Mae's Meat Market in Eastland? Servings are huge

Oh my goodness this story I was about to cry but it got better!!!
Our son was a runner. We couldn't stress to the school enough that he is strong willed and fasted he will run and not stop. It always scared the hell out of me leaving him at school when the teachers acted like they didn't understand this. The teachers told me one day they had to "corral him" and all had these horrible looks on their faces. I maybe wrong my son isn't an animal he doesn't need "corralled." He didn't go back to that school after that. We warned them. 🤷🏽‍♀️

I don't think it really matters what you feel you need to say to Mrs. Yates. What is important is that if you want to go see her is that you go before it's to late. I'm sure she would appreciate your visit more than anything and that you felt like after growing up she was a good teacher. Just go visit her maybe get her some flowers or something sweet. Just go before it's to late.....at 83 never know.

Your 100% right there Chevy. I happened to run into her and her husband over 30 years ago at a shopping mall.

The town that I grew up and went to school at was very small back then. A population of around 450. The entire school might have been around 150 bodies if you counted kindergarten through the 12th grade. Even then you would have to include all the teachers to reach the number of 150.

Because it was such a small town (group of people) Everyone who lived there pretty much knew everything that went on. And we're more like family than anything else.

Miss Yates husband was always helping coach us kids outside of school from pee wee baseball through babe ruth.

Along with every other events that goes along with growing up. Their son and I were pretty close to the same age. So we were like brothers. I still to this day see Miss Yates son who is a farmer, he has Turkey houses and cattle. Called him just the other day and ask what he was doing. Said he was talking with his Mother then. Heard him tell her it was me calling. I told him would call back latter so that he could visit with that young lady. Heard her in the back ground laughing about me calling her a young lady.

So when I ran into Miss Yates and her husband 30 + years ago. I made it a point that day to thank her even that far back for all she had done for me growing up. I know she appreciated knowing how i felt about everything she had done back then.

Little did I know 30 + years ago when i thanked her then just how much more what she had done, taking that special interest and time not only for me but all of her students that she taught during her career would play into the way my life and i am sure the others she taught would turn out even to this day.

I don't think teacher's in general including my Miss Yates take into consideration just how much of a difference wether it be good or bad they will make in that students life.

I am sure my Miss Yates probably wasn't thinking entirely about the difference she would end up making in the kids who she taught lives. I think she probably just wanted to be the best at what she had choose to be and that choice was to be aTeacher ! I was just lucky enough to of had her as my teacher. From the first day of kindergarten when i ran away from her only an hour or so after having met her. She never gave up on me for the rest of the years i had her for a Teacher lol !!!

504RP, my suggestion of what to give Miss Yates is simply a personal visit. While there tell her one of the stories about your schooling just like you told here. Her hearing first person how those times formed who you are is more important to her than anything else you could give her.
