Future of Energy

Help Support CattleToday:

The problem with hydrogen production has always been that it takes more energy to make it than you get out of it--making it cost in-effective without govt subsidy. The part that is missing from that article is whether or not this new process reverses that fact.

And, new and stricter controls on Methane are about to be released by the US govt--maybe as early as this week.

Who remembers the gas shortages in the early 70's? We were told we would be completely out of gasoline within a few years. The combustion engine was developed in times a lot harder than today. Crank shaft, pistons, rods, and bearings have not changed much from 100 years ago. With all this modern technology, no one has "fixed" much. I don't think we'll get to innovation methods of 100 years ago until we absolutely have to.

"Peak Oil" :lol2:   :p :p

Even that haven of "sky is falling" peak oil proponents "The Oil Drum" website has shut down (as of Sept 2013)

Methane hydrate is the next big thing.... Cause you know they can't lie on the internet.
"bon jour" (says the State Farm guy)

We're years away from being able to safely and efficiently harvest methane calthrate "fire ice" from the sea bed or permafrost, but it "May" turn out to be a case of "use it or lose it" thing too--methane is 30 X worse greenhouse gas than C02, so might make better sense to burn the methane and just release it's by product of C02 instead of the methane itself going into the atmosphere--which it will do eventually anyway.

I have a customer that hauls his own milk and runs the trucks on methane. He had the technology all worked out and the trucks ready to hit the road two or three years before he was able to put them in service. The state couldn't figure out how to tax him and they wouldn't let him run them until they got their share.
Government will continue be the biggest stumbling block to any new energy sources.

Govt is the biggest stumbling block for most things.
