I know some comments were made in the exchange student thread about foster parents, but I didn’t want to hijack.

As was mentioned in the other thread, it takes a special kind of person to be a foster parent, and it’s great to give kids who need a home a loving family. However, there is an issue with it I our area that I notice being a teacher.

I don’t know how much money people get for being a foster parent, but it must be a great amount, because it appears some do it for income. They get a house full of kids that they really can’t handle, and they do t even have a job.

In addition, a lot of them accept kids with severe behavior problems who have been in institutions. There are private adoption agencies, and they are eager to get these kids into a home regardless of their severe needs.
Their requirements for the foster parent is much more slack than a state agency.

The parents really can’t handle the kids, but lucky for them, they can use the school for a babysitter 7 hours a day. When the parents have to be called in due to the uncontrollable behavior, they can just sit and smile and offer no suggestions or behavior plans for the student. It always amazes me how “ they don’t do that at home”.

Reading these kids files will make the hair stand up on the back of your neck. It would take a highly trained behavior specialist to handle them, but they are dropped off at a home who knows nothing about it.

Usually, things will get out of hand and social services will have to remove them from the home. These are the foster parents that I would like to ring their neck.

It's hard to believe what some of the kids have been through. We do some different things through local sponsorship - scholarship programs. We're to selfish with our time to foster kids.

A neighbor had 13 on his two acre place. I owned property on three sides. It was not a good situation. They locked the kids outside and some of the kids were abusing others. The teenage girls had to do the cooking and cleaning and clothes washing. Most of them ran away. The kids were always climbing my fences, busting bottles, tearing up feeders and typical little boy mischief. I blamed the parents. Thankfully they moved.

What is the level of State Oversight? I assumed that the States have very strict oversight protocols to prevent the circumstances you described.

Remember Lafoy Finicam of the Bundy group occupying government land. Lafoy and his wife were fostering children.

everything is about money.

I see them advertising.. Make $$$ become a foster parent.

they like the kids with the problems.. because then they get additional money through SSI (social security) .. thats where they really make out.

I'll have people fill out rental applications and they'll have 4-5 kids bringing in over 3,000 / month. On top of that the house is paid (4 bed the will pay up to 1650.00/month currently) food, phone.. etc.. all paid. After everything some have 5k coming in and almost 0 going out because all that is paid through other agencies..

Unfortunately, I have seen a few of these folks who do it for the $$$$. :(

I went to school, years ago, with a "foster kid". The home she had was great! They adored her, treated her well, she was the only child and that girl grew up to be a wonderful, well rounded, productive person. She was one of the lucky ones.

In/at the church I used to attend, one of the 'families' there were clearly fostering for a living. :(

I believe most foster parents in the US today are grandparents or other close family (aunts, uncles). Tough gig, not what most expected to be doing in their golden years...

That doesn't pay. We're doing just that. Raising two grandsons and it has been a blessing. Had no thoughts of paying daycare, medical, dental, and general costs associated with it at this age, but here I am. Just glad I am able.

I have no idea what oversight is involved. It seemed to me that CPS should have been called. A couple of those kids were great kids. But how do you allow two or three to come up to the barn and not the rest ?

Tough situation. If there were more people willing to be foster parents, the states could be more selective. But I'm guessing the states are just thankful to have anyone at all. Good foster parents are a true blessing for all involved.

It is a tough situation, and it’s even tougher for children with disabilities. I don’t know if a single foster parent with disabled children who isn’t just doing it for the money. If people were serious about it, they would have things in place to handle them, but the ones I know are just a bunch of regular joes who want the money.

I’ve even known if agencies to take kids directly from mental institutions, put them with a foster family, and they then enroll them in a public school system. Anybody with any gray matter should know that is not a recipe for success.

I've seen folks down this way quit their jobs and take in 4-5 foster kids. They make a fortune off of it. We took in a young man back in the 80's who was in HS. Parents were divorced and mom was farming her kids out so she could party. Good young man. Graduated HS we sent him to college. He graduated in 3 1/2 years and of all things made a baptist preacher. lololol. Married with two sons of his own now and a great young man.

6:48 PM yesterday my cell door magically opened and I was free to wander. I'm sure I'll mess up again (if only by accident) and get kicked out for good eventually.

Incarcerated and released by computer technology. Did you have to wear one of those tracking leg bracelets?

Not yet anyway. Went over to Ranchers.net and spent some time. Talking about dead.
