Flushing my new donor cow

Help Support CattleToday:

Just because someone is flushing a cow right now does not necessarily mean that they are implanting those embryos to calve 9 months from now. Flushing is a great insurance policy on a cow that has a lot of potential based upon pedigree, EPD's and their own performance thus far in their life.

For example we purchased a spring bred heifer in Oct 2005. She calved in April 2006 and since we are a fall calving operation we decided to flush her and freeze the embryos in the mean time. We did this due to the future potential that we see in her as well as an insurance policy in case something unthinkable were to happen to her that would cause us to get only the one calf out of her.

She is a Future Direction daughter with a lot of frame for being a daughter of his and goes back to G A R Ext 614 on the dam's side. Her individual performance and phenotype are outstanding. She is currently bred for a fall 2007 calf.

We flushed her to Riverbend Mile High 3718. Got 5 high quality embryos that are now on ice. We then rebred her to Mile High for a natural calf to see what kind of results the mating will give.
