I've never heard anyone say 7018 is hard to weld with. In fact up here it is often referred to as 'farmer rod'.

Around here 6011 is a "farmer rod". They weld through paint, rust, dirt, oil, and are cheap. Definitely not the best rod to use though.

6010 (the DC only version of 6011) is the rod pipeline welders use for the bead pass. The bead hand is the alpha dog on the line, for whatever that's worth lol

I've welded a lot of pipe with 6011 root pass then capped it off with 7018.
