Eastern Grama Grass

Help Support CattleToday:

If you mean native Eastern Gama grass, it grows around here usually in damp spots or bottomland though it tolerates drought pretty well. It doesn't do well were cattle have frequent access because they will eat it to death. It's sometimes called ice cream grass for it's palatability. It's good stuff for cattle if grazing is controlled adequately.

If allowed to go to long before cutting it gets very woody and the palabiity drops to zilch or close to it. After about 4-5 years you can barely drive across the field. It grows a raised clumpy rhizom and it beats the snot out of you.
