Neighbor called said he had a dead calf some went to help and take a look. 7 weeks old. Had an enormous amount of waterey, white chalk looking discharge around where it was laying. Calf was nice sized and healthy looking otherwise. I saw it running and playing with his other calves last night. Anyone have a clue what may have happened?

Tough question. Could be a lot of things including lead poisoning, but my 1st thought is
a type of Clostridium (Type A)... it's linked to hemorrhagic bowel syndrome (bloody gut)
and kills 85% of animals after onset of symptoms.
The real kick in the head is symptoms don't always appear before death.

Type A is not covered in the traditional 7, 8, or 9 way clostridium vaccines which cover perfringens
type C and D and of course it could be one of those too.

p.s.
I'm not a Vet and my best advice would be to ask a Local large animal Vet for their thoughts.
