Cattle Industry Misconceptions; Chip Hines.

Help Support CattleToday:

I think the message is that 1100 lb cows are more profitable than 1600 lb cows.

A scale in my alley has been telling me the same thing. They both wean 650lb calves. the 1100 lb cow consumes a lot less groceries in the process than the 1600 lb cow. This quickly became very obvious to a beginner like me with limited acres and a scale.

While the 1600 lb cow's steer may top out heavier than the 1100 lb cow's steer, again he will consume more groceries and time in the feedlot to do it. The ADG will likely be about the same for both steers up to the 1100 lb cow's steer's mature weight.

In beef as in row crops, some folks have lost sight of the fact it is the net that counts, not the gross.

Thanks for the link.
