I'm watching the choice - select spread reach $15-$17 and it gots me to thinking.

I just started marketing Angus source calves with visual tags. We mostly sell weaned calves around 500 pounds, not finished. We will soon be selling pre-conditioned calves.

Any hoo, I realize the choice select spread is for feedlot / slaughter calves. When would be the best time to sell weanings when trying to optimize on the spread?

The Choice/Select spread is somewhat cyclical but more important to me would be WHO to sell to, more than WHEN to sell.

If you had sufficient past data showing that your calves would reach choice at a high rate, some buyers would be more interested than others.

Some feeders still claim that more money can be made on Select calves. There is a big market for Select beef. Wal-Mart for example.
