I was watching the news this morning and they said they are using the NORAD satellite system to track Santa Claus. I am quite concerned about this diversion of resources from our National Defense system. Apparently, they are sending up fighter jets to escort Santa across Canada and the US. What happens if an emergency arises and those fighter planes are needed elsewhere. I'm also quite concerned that Rudolph's nose is giving off enough radiation to be tracked by the NORAD satellite system. I'm not sure that I want him prancing on my rooftop with that kind of heat coming off him. He may start a fire or something. Here's the link.

Santa Intercept!

I personally intercepted Santa and his reindeer in my trusty F-18 a few years back. I was leading a two ship out of Cold Lake, Alberta.

We were scrambled by NORAD to ID a high flying, high speed "unknown" heading south. It took place at just over 45,000 feet about 500 nautical miles north of Yellowknife in the North West Territories. Rudolphs nose actually does not give off radiation that affects the radar, but it is bright enough that it does allow you a quick visual contact when within about 10 nautical mile.

The number of toys onboard created a pretty good reflection, and allowed me a quick contact and we called "Judy" to our tactical control - my lock up took place at just over a 40 nautical mile range. We had weapons selected, but maintained the "Safe" mode because we were pretty sure what we were up against. When my section attempted to do a tactical ID to confirm what we suspected, we found he was actually more manoeuverable than we would have suspected.

My ground speed readout was showing approximately 1130 nautical miles per hour as I was in afterburner and flying at a speed of approximately Mach 1.5. He literally waved at me and left me and my number two in the dust.

We RTB'd and laughed at how an old sleigh and a few darned animals could actually out manoeuver a couple of modern day fighters driven by hot top gun types like us AND run away from them at speeds we were unable to match. No wonder this guy can deliver to so many in such a short time!!

It's simply magic - something we all have to accept at certain times of the year.

Even now, at my age I am still a believer. Merry Christmas to all - especially to some good friends serving in harms way.

Bez,
My 8 year old son Mitchell would like to know if you also saw any elves with Santa in the sleigh. We have been debating whether any of them actually fly with him on Christmas eve or not. Thanks and Merry Christmas.

Mitchell,

It all happened so fast I could not give you an honest answer. I was approaching him from a head on aspect and he turned into me in the blink of an eye. Those reindeer obeyed his commands so fast I could not believe it - even though I saw it with my own eyes.

My wingman - "Opie" - was about 2 miles behind me in perfect tactical position to make a shot if necessary, but I recognized Santa and called - "Friendly, Friendly" - to Opie on our tactical radio frequency. Santa turned hard into me to take away my tactical advantage. Opie immediately "safed up" and called to me that he could see the target, but was too far away to be sure it was what he truly thought he saw. When I confirmed it, Opie simply formated on my wing and we dropped into Yellowknife for some fuel before we flew home.

Santa's sleigh was incredibly manoeuverable. He did exactly what was required to win a potential fight. He was sitting high on what appeared to be brown coloured bags. I would assume they were toys for the children of the world.

Elves are known to be quite small and it would have been easy for some of them to be there and for me to miss them.

As I age, I have since begun to think about Santa, and the places he flies through. Some of those skies are not too friendly - even though he does his work for the children of the world. Perhaps Santa could teach us old fighter pilots a thing or two about life. He has magic that makes even people like me realize there are many things in this world we will never understand - I suppose that is why we have things like belief, and faith.

Perhaps Santa has lots of knowledge to pass on to some of us - if we would only listen.

Mitchell - Opie was a great friend of mine. His family and my family would like to wish you and your family a warm and happy Christmas.

My very best to you,

Bez

Bez,
Thanks for the help in that question. Mitchell asked Santa in his note last night and Santa replied back that usually 2 elves ride along to help take care of the reindeer. Hope that all had a wonderful Christmas.

Jeff
