Hereford bull on 3 year old cows

Only bulls that will be used to sire registered calves will need DNA on profile. From the AHA, FAQ: "Will every bull calf that is registered be required to have a DNA profile on file? No. This is the most misunderstood fact of the new policy. Only bulls that will become herd sires and thereby...

    Thorn bushes/trees

Here's a pic of a huisache: After Surmount: We've mostly used the Surmount on smaller stuff (under 6ft) & have had good results as long as there's a good application on all the leaves. It's best to spray late summer (August) & fall.

    Watching topic??

At the bottom of the page on the left, there are options to "Subscribe Topic" & "Bookmark Topic". I think "Subscribe Topic" sends you a notification when a reply is made. Not sure what "Bookmark Topic" does exactly but either of those may be what you're looking for?

Some things are better left unimproved.

If you're at the bottom of the page, at the very bottom on the left is a little up arrow with "Board index" next to it. That will also take you back to the main index without having to scroll all the way back to the top first.

On the main page of each board, on the right, under the column "Last Post", it'll have the user's name & date of the last post. Out to the side of the username is what looks like a little sheet of paper. If you click on that, it will take you directly to the last post under that topic.

For Those Who Wean On The Trailer

Preconditioning typically means more than just weaning & running on grass for 30-45 days. It often includes certain vaccination requirements as well as other management practices, such as dehorning & castrating: "Since most preconditioning programs require castrating bull calves, producers can...

    cost effectiveness of castrating?

Extra tools? Who doesn't carry a pocketknife? AND I didn't say it could all be done in an hour. I said an extra hour. Remember.....you're already penning 'em & running 'em through the chute to vaccinate. ;-) But you're right.....whatever works for you. :) (Besides.....those bull...

    cost effectiveness of castrating?

$25x100=?? $35x100=?? so it takes an extra hour? $2500-$3500 for an hour of work? not a bad payday. ;-)

    cost effectiveness of castrating?

$25-$35/head is the same whether you have 1 or 100. it's money left on the table by not castrating. if you vaccinate, then you're already running them through the chute, so what's another minute (if you're slow) or two (if you're really slow) per calf to cut them? and if you don't...

    Terminology

does the word "tigerstripe" ring a bell? wonder what other terms you've never heard? try a google search for "2nd calf heifers"....it's not an uncommon term & it doesn't seem to be limited to one area. technically, it's incorrect, because a female bovine that has calved is a cow, not...

    Any reason not to??

what kind of feed/nutrition have the cows had? if they're hungry, not only will their milk production be low, but they're probably not going to breed back.
