    Down cow won't drink

We have never had any luck after one goes down. With or without vet, tubings, iv's, etc. Just had one recently that calved one evening, found her in the pond the next morning, at the edge, got her out and fed and watered her for over a week. Had the vet out, she gave her an IV, but even though...

    Coyotes and calves?

We've had them to grab our calves...We have to keep a jack in our herd to help keep them at bay. Found a newborn last year that had been dragged over the bobwire fence. Two locations....Two jacks. So far this year haven't lost a one.

Just wondering if anyone attended the heifer sale today at Cow Creek and how it went? How were the prices?

    Purpose of Extension Office?

I totally agree with the above post about our county agent's office. If they don't know the answer to your question, they will find out for you, most of the time they know it. They have been very helpful and like he states, great information on the MSU website. Sounds like we are very fortunate!

    Cow Creek merger

Read where Southern Cattle has acquired Cow Creek Ranch.....I have to wonder what Joe would think about this. The article does not mention Matt at all, so it seems he's out of the picture, but I see where Joy has come on board with the new guys. I don't think he was serious about the ranching...

    Ear tags

We've used Allflex for years. Have noticed lately that we are losing quite a few of them. Thought about trying the Z tags next go round. I believe Allflex must have something going on with the materials.

    Automatic waterers?

You're right on the ponds Dixie. The weather here in MS has really been surreal this year. Snow this morning in Central MS, sunny by noon. We only experienced some half frozen ones, cows still had plenty to drink from. We are lucky living in the South.

    CALF RE-introduced

We have had this to happen to weaned calves. Kept them up for weeks, and as soon as they got back around to momma they started all over again. Sometimes it would just be one, and again it might be three. And it was milk, would have it all over their face. So then we would have to start the...

    training

Where did you get her? We have had heelers, and as everyone has said, you can't start them too early. Commands are the most important thing. We had one that would help us when we worked our cows, but he wouldn't mind us. He wouldn't get off the cows until he was ready, and sometimes that would...

    Squeeze Chutes

I agree with the 100 different answers to this question....But personally, from a woman's viewpoint, I work the chute side of the operation, I prefer the Priefert. We had the Powder River, with the scissor type headgate. The animals kept getting stuck in them, we almost lost one, had to take...

    Retrieving pet steer

Well, I certainly would not have gone this route, but they did and I'm glad it worked out for them and their calf. He sure is one lucky calf. Great story by the way

    Weaning Brangus

We wean our Brangus calves in a lot surrounded by pipe, momma is right outside, and can't get to them. Start them on creep feed, 3-4 days they are ok, and eating. We don't integrate them back in the herd, tried it a few times, they always started suckling again. Steers are sold, and replacement...

    Water Question

Yea, we use ponds while they are in the pastures, when they're brought up to work or to keep up, then they have the automatic watering troughs. That's about all everybody around these parts have is ponds.
