Clover in the pasture surpised me + scurred bull

Just curious. What good is it to have a bull that doesn't fill out until he is 28 months? Since most feedlot cattle are harvested well before that, shouldn't he want a calf that shows his genetic and phenotypic potential much earlier?

    Some Newbie Questions!

Soothing, not loud, music has been shown to relieve stress in cattle. Dairy animals have especially been researched with music and usually give more milk. My cows prefer Beethoven over Bach.

Pulling calves using a truck or tractor...

Sometimes you have to make do with what you have on hand. A few years ago, a neighbor called me from his pasture for calving help. Turned out the calf's head was turned back and we could not get it forward. The cow was almost done for......................she was worn out and had quit. I...

    Salesbarn Prices

I beg to differ. "Market Timing Beef cattle's economic role is converting low-priced or unmarketable forages into a saleable product. With forage-driven production systems, most cows calve in the spring. Weaning and selling those calves in the fall makes a supply bulge that causes lower calf...

    Beef/Marbling/Tenderness/ Butterfat ??

An excess of caloric intake, above and beyond what is needed to grow and maintain is how marbling gets deposited. It's also where backfat comes from, the biggest waste in the beef business. Whether those calories come from fat or carbohydrates makes no difference. I could see where they might...

    Fencing for Calves

Electric fence won't hold a Char X calf. Get yourself some guard rail and build it 10 feet tall so's they can't jump over. Has something to do with the diluter gene and the inability to conduct electricity properly .......... ;-)

Lost a Calf due to flood in AL

 We haven't had a drop of rain in two weeks. With the wind blowing hot each day, that water was gone two days after the rain.

    Talking Creep Feed

When creep feeding calves, the cow does not benefit. The calves will suck the same amount of milk. For sure it helps start the weaned calves on feed when taken from momma.

    Talking Creep Feed

Most times calves only need a little boost of energy in their diets to put them above par at weaning. Whole corn will do fine for this. The experience from them eating out of a trough/bunk is immeasurable at weaning due to them not standing around bawling 24/7 and not knowing how to eat feed...

    S.E ALABAMA QUESTION

March calving should be perfect, except the bulls will be breeding in May-June which will be hot. Thing I like about March calving is Ryegrass/Clover and NOT feeding mommas all winter when calves are sucking.

    property rights question.

Sounds to me like you have a hard time confronting your neighbors assertively. My neighbors would never come on my place without asking because they know what kind of guy I am. Just the simple question(s)......."what are you doing on my place without asking" or "do you think I would come on...
