    Opinions: Electric Fence

Would work just fine, use fiberglass posts and you don't have to worry about shorting out. Make a nice system.

    Feeder cattle castration setback

I've noticed the opposite with small calves. They dont' seem to notice the band and if you get on the wrong sign of the moon they can mope around for a couple days with a knife.

    Standing in mud

I believe there is a mesh you can put down under the rock that helps solidify the base. I'm sure others have more experience with it than myself. I just know the product exists, don't know much about it.

    Standing in mud

If you can move the feeder every time you put a bale in it so you don't get the accumulation of manure and they won't wallow in one spot as much. If that's not possible, rock or concrete are about your only option.

Does any money change hands on the Super high $ bulls?

Very true, lot of ways to get that "pay back" on those high dollar bulls

Does any money change hands on the Super high $ bulls?

That $$ is real money. It's highly illegal for it to not be real. If they can sell semen on the bull there is a revenue stream that can make that bull payback. If they pick the right one the pay off can be quite large.

Holsteins will seemingly eat anything but that photo looks photoshopped

    Gate placement

How about double gates on the barn and calving pen so that you configure and make it possible to go any direction. Also a gate on the end of the barn at pen 1. Also gives the option of creating a small holding pen in the alley between the barn and calving pen.

    What causes this?

It is the mucus plug in the cervix. When a cow is in heat you will see the same thing except clear because it is discharged regularly. Typically the plug will be discharged a week or two before calving. It is caused by the dialation of the cervix and hormones starting to crank again.

Opening up older generations to doing thing different?

I try my best to go the path of least resistance. Our set up is a good example of what not to do when it comes to building a family business. Too many stubborn people and too many years of labor and $$ that each side seems to think are worth a different amount of equity. Not sure if thats the...

We have gone to using all continuous fence for stuff that needs to be tight and continuous fence for the low pressure stuff.

    Steers or Bred cows.

That math steers me towards bred cows, even if you kill her when your done. Seems like if you can feed her cheap enough you can take the calf off and feed it and ship her if she's too old to keep around

cattle prices of heifer angus (300-400lbs) or bred cow islow

$3 corn was easy to see coming if you pay attention to the macro economics of a corn crop. The cattle deal won't last forever as eventually herd building will happen, its not going to the moon like some predict but we have to get increased production in the system to effect the supply driven...

Buying and selling cattle through stock yards

But that is my whole point. You can't broadly paint "traders" with that brush. There just as many crooked producers who don't specify what has been done and when it comes to the the liability of the cattle you can't regulate people into doing what is "right." But broadcasting to the public...

Buying and selling cattle through stock yards

If they are not originally sold as "must go back to the farm" the purchaser is no longer liable
