tncattle, I'll bet the owner will let you do it if you'll ask. ;-)

Got to be some kind of record

Well Lon, that IS what I said! Thanks. Not having any kind of calf is also fatal on my place.

Got to be some kind of record

Caustic, Dun, Lon: Without a doubt having heifer calves is bad for a cow's health. My conclusion is about as scientific as some of the FDA's.

    Young bull behaviour

I've had a few one or two day old calves give me a real good butt on the leg. Usually when I have them up trying to resolve a problem. I think it's an instinctive self-defense mechanism they're born with rather than a sign of their future nature.

Cought Year Old Heifer suckling her mom

I think I would isolate the mom and her baby together for a few days to get them bonded again. It's possible that the calf has left her for the other cows and she will continue hitchhiking off them; thereby depriving their calves of milk. Should work itself out then. I used to get real ticked...

    Best time to buy

Like Caustic, if I'm in the market for cows, I get to the barn early. I get on the catwalk with paper and pencil and begin gathering info. Find cows that look to be prospects. If she has a calf, I then go to the calf pen and match up mama and calf by finding calf with number one higher than...

    Allflex A Tags

Dun, I got mine about a week ago. I chose blank tags. They sent the tags, marker and application gun.

    Best time to buy

It is real useful to the one seeking advice and the one giving it if everyone will put at least their general locale in their profile.

    coccidiosis

Caustic can calves get coccidiosis through mama's milk? Reason I ask; I don't think my calves even drink water at ten days old. Maybe mess around with it if the other animals are drinking.

    Help with sale barn process

Misty just take your cattle to the sale barn and unload them as instructed by the people there. They'll sell them and you pick up the check. Information at this point about things like lights and heavies probably won't alter the outcome if you're new at it. Just stay for the sale and talk...

    Growing Corn

Row cropping requires a whole nother set of skills. Also different equipment. I'm not big on borrowing equipment, or lending for that matter. At your present level of operation, I would continue to buy the corn. srbeef makes grazing corn look pretty attractive but I venture to say that most...

    Cows wasting hay

Dun, I absolutely agree. My hay processor rolls tight 5x6 rolls. He's a friend and very reliable; however, I'm convinced that my hay waste would be reduced by smaller rolls in my hay-rings. Also I'm now using some of the cone feeders and with the large rolls I've thus far been unable to dump...

    need advice on fencing

He's telling you right. If you're going to skimp anywhere on your fence; don't let it be on your corners and braces. Got a neighbor who built a 6 strand barb fence; pulled the wire real tight, probably too tight, and every corner is leaning.

    Where do you live???

Shucks, Boudreaux and Thibodeaux are in the family tree on Dad's side. Even got the Bourgeois and I cannot find a W in that name anywhere :D Shucks boogie, some Thibodeauxs found their way all the way to south middle TN. Used to work with one; great guy. Took a long time for me to adjust to...

    need advice on fencing

Moloss, they're both pressure treated but all pressure treating is not equal. I prefer the posts that I get thru our co-op to those at TSC. Yes the distance between the uprights in the H matters. 4' is too close together. I usually use about a 7' brace between the uprights.

Steers Grazing Corn & Cows/Heifers (pics)

Jim, It's unlikely my cows and yours will ever meet. I sure hope not. Wouldn't want them comparing the food they get. Your cows sure look good. ;-)

    Caustic's Crystal Ball

Have you been watching the "rare earth" metals that are being used in new battery technology? Wall Street sure has. Guess what nation has the greatest supply of these metals? I'll give you a clue; the U.S.' greatest trade deficit is with this nation. That being said, I'll repeat my personal...

    Caustic's Crystal Ball

I don't believe the love affair that Americans have with cars is anywhere near passionate for the electric car yet. I realize that battery technology and distribution stations are making progress but It will take a quantum change in Americans to widely accept electric powered cars on a wide...

    bad news in beef

Seems that folks in the beef chain all the way up and down have very good aim at shooting ourselves in the foot. The consumer's perception impacts all of us in the business. It's just as damaging as the reality. So why do we just keep pushing the limits to sometimes achieve small economic...
