    Safegaurd or Valbazen drench

We've been drenching the whole herd with Synanthic around July 4 & the calves again around Labor day. We use injectable Ivermectin or Cydectin spring & fall to hit the lice along with worms. We used pour-on for more than a decade and I think we had a worm problem built up in the pastures...

    Worming Ivermectin Dose Concern

About 3 years ago we switched to injectable, spring & fall, about Memorial day & Thanksgiving. I've noticed a marked decrease in lice and mites with each passing year. Last fall we had some stuff come up and I didn't get the fall worming done. We just did it this past week. About 10% had...

    Head Butt Injury

OK, I admit, I did not read most of the posts. I did want to share the outcome of a similar injury on a cow here a few years ago. She was lame, doc said it was a stifle injury. It was most likely caused by a cow hitting her in the leg, similar to how you described your cow. Stifle injuries...

    Weaning by the signs

I'm sorry I missed that before. If that's been your experience then I'm going to make a real effort to wean by the signs from now on. We lost a Red Poll cross cow about 12 years ago because she didn't dry up, got mastitis and then things went REALLY bad. I don't want to go through that again.

    dark stools in cattle

Some of these 'weeds' like plantain & chicory have higher mineral content than the normal forages. A change in the mineral content could cause a change in the appearance of the stool.

    Weaning by the signs

I moved the cows to a corn stubble field last night. They were in the field 2 hours before they remembered they had calves someplace, :lol2: . The calves are still eating good. Halters are going on a few, the rest are still getting used to being touched. I always worry about the heavy...

    Weaning by the signs

We weaned Saturday. We boostered the vax, oral wormer, and moved into pens in the barn. Cows went back to a drylot on 9% protein hay. They'll be moved to a corn stubblefield tomorrow. Calves are on free choice alfalfa hay, 24% protein and starting on a bit of grain. The cows are bawling more...

Oh no... bad eye owie on young animal

Not bad! He looked like he was in good health, they seem to have great recovery abilities when they're already healthy & have good nutrition. I thought we had our first case of pinkeye(this year) 2 months ago in a 2 year old. We caught her and I decided she had an injury to her eyeball. I...

    Feeding question

We turn ours out on stockpiled fescue that was clipped in July and allowed to regrow. We feed 3-4 pounds of 14% feed per head per day. We keep a bit of fresh hay available and as the grass disappears they eat more hay. In the spring as the grass grows they still eat some hay. The last month...

    Weaning by the signs

Well, we're weaning on the 12th of Oct because we got the vet out here on Friday for cutting, dehorning, & vaccinating. I'm waiting 2 weeks, and then they get weaned, vax booster, wormed, & weighed.

    Sick holstein steer

I'd recommend getting the vet out there and discuss your herd health, worming, and feeding regimen. That steer would probably benefit from probiotics, and I wouldn't have taken away his grain completely. Has he been on pasture with the grain, or were you just feeding grain and no forage?

    Noromectin pour on

We used to use it, made the switch to injectables & oral solutions 3 years ago; won't go back to pour-ons. I will use generic injectables.

    Dying Calves?

First. I looked up the Dumor ingredients, it's got soy in it. You'll have healthier calves with 100% milk in the milk replacer. Might be other things I'm not thinking about, but it looks like you have fresh water covered, got electrolytes. Are they in a barn, or have shade? Dry, not too...

Lucky_P, what about Ideopathic Epilepsy? Probably not that in this case, but it is a genetic cause of seizures. I'm not sure how prevalent it is outside of Hereford cattle.

Possible Business Idea... Would this work??

Often a bottle calf heifer will be a free-martin. I know a guy who used to have a Holstein or two and raise bottle calves on them. He'd bring the cows into the barn morning & night to feed them grain. While they were eating their grain he'd turn the calves loose on them. He'd have one calf...

How Prevelant is Pink Eye in herds today

Knersie, the LA200 treatment was my treatment method 2 years ago, and prior. I quit squirting it in the eyes last year. We were losing eyes, they'd swell and never go down. I reasoned that some cows developed lumps from LA 200 injections in the neck, maybe squirting it in an eye with severe...

    Looking for ideas

We usually only introduce creep feed a couple weeks before weaning. We've got some calves that just won't go for it. Last year we took hay cubes and soaked them enough they were damp and fell apart. We mixed some of our ground feed with it. The calves took to it real fast. Even if this...

    Calf That Is Not Growing

Because of the respiratory issue, this calf will probably never do good. If you've wormed her and she gets all the feed she wants, then you've probably done all you can do for this calf. Has a vet ever evaluated the respiratory issue?
