    Black Hereford

Very, Very few holsteins can meet the ribeye, carcass weight, and muscling requirements of CAB.

    Black Hereford

The other CAB requirements would keep out "old black cows". You should read them.

    Jersey bull on first timers

We've done it here. After the first few hit the ground, we quit checking on them. Zero calving problems. These were jersey bulls on Angus and Hereford heifers. The calves weren't bad at all. A feeder said he could consistently get 60% choice from angus/jersey calves, and they can qualify...

    Black Herefords Question

I think black herefords have to be at least 7/8 hereford - so not much heterosis there. The idea was to get a homozygous black hereford cross to mate with other breeds and get black calves. This was done to compete with angus. To get a 7/8 hereford that was homozygous black, they had to...

2016 calving season on CBJ ranch

Does is make as much difference if you sell 50 or more at a time as one lot to match the price with the dam?

2016 calving season on CBJ ranch

TT, In my part of the world, if the calves are branded and castrated, they have probably been given at least one round of shots - whether they have an ear tag or not. Any other rounds of shots / weaning / preconditioning are stated at the sale.

2016 calving season on CBJ ranch

I don't tag the calves. Don't care which sire goes with which calf. Only care which dam if the calf is a dink.

    Irish Black Angus

I think what you are talking about are Irish Blacks. They are not angus. Try google.

    Braunvieh Cattle

I have some braunvieh cows. The angus/braunvieh calves are always the biggest and best in the herd. (vs. angus/angus)

    Young Replacement Bull Prices

Ha! More PhD’s per capita in this county then anywhere in the nation. We're supposedly "enlightened".... I try to keep to the farm as much as possible. :cowboy: The most PHD's per capita in the USA is Los Alamos County, New Mexico.

Since bulls are the topic...here is our new one.

That's exactly what we do - 2 equal size herds (on a average year). The maternal herd has our best cows with bulls from one angus line (all half brothers). The terminal herd has the growthiest bulls we can afford. When all the cows in the terminal herd have been replaced with heifers from the...

    simmental longhorn croos

You won't need to worry about the birthweights with longhorn cows. There are good reasons to start with longhorn cows. One is the cost per cow initial investment. Another is they are easy keepers. Also agree the only unmarketable calf is a dead calf.

    Litton Charolais

It might have seemed like a good gamble at the time because of the rarety to the breed in the US at the time.
