    Santa Gertrudis

50 years ago, Gerts were thick and deep with a lot of heavy bone. They seem to be a completely different breed from what they once were. Now they are fine boned and tend to be poor muscling on a general over all basis. They do milk very well, and add a lot of hybrid vigor in a crossbreed so that...

    Bull Calf for critique

I like Bart. He is nicely muscled, his ham goes all the way down, he's polled, and has a nice small head, and a nice low head set. His faults, (narrow between front legs, straight hocks and a bit sheathy) are minor. I would try him.

    A few pics.

Not too bad. We've been selling them for 25 years and have a reputation ( a good one I hope) Here are some pics of them as weanlings. From there we background them until February or March on a silage and pellet diet, and then sell them between 700 and 950 pounds. Although the majority of them...

    A few pics.

JW, YR King Ranch/ YR Red Camille The day we bought him was the day of a nasty winter storm. It was a Transcon sale, so we placed a telephone order for a dollar amount with the choice of 4 bulls and we ended up with this guy, our third choice. He has a bit of a wide head, but then everything...

A steer with a little chrome. His Ugly Gert Dad is laying down behind him. A good steer. One of 2 bull calves I am keeping for my own use. That cow is not his mother but she was coming in heat and he was following.... good boy. My favorite yearling heifer. This is a Simmental bull I...

    Gert AI

I had a Hatchet son and he only lasted one year with the cows because of his temperment. One moderate polled bull I used was Wendts "Dandy" I got a real nice bull using him. Moderate size, deep bodied polled and clean underneath.

    santa gertrudis breeders

I forgot to mention that just about any other breed mated to your gerts will give you tremendous hybrid vigor and excellent weaning weights. We use Simmental to cross with and another breeder up here in Canada uses Blone Aquitane. You want that first calf small though, so stick with gert for...

    santa gertrudis breeders

I never had a uterine prolapse in a gert but I have had 2 vaginal in the last 27 years. Gerts in the 50's had a lot more muscle than they do now. I don't know if its because of the show ring or what but modern gerts are not as deep as they used to be, and the muscling has decreased to where most...

Import / Export to Canada ?

I just imported one from Missouri over a month ago. Here is a web site to the guidlines and requirements. http://www.aphis.usda.gov/regulations/v ... _bo_br.pdf The buyer from Canada has to apply for an import permit and he can find info on this here. http://www.inspection.gc.ca/english/ani...

Some more pics from our show..

Eye candy for sure. I am grateful that at least one country is preserving, improving, and maintaining the phenotype of the breeds. Its embarrassing to compare our chickenized ones over here. They all look the same. And we are somehow proud of that.

    Bad feet

I would say, yes you can. Select a bull with bolt upright pasterns with a short toe and lots of heel on the foot. Been there done that.
