Hereford - New Sire DNA Policy

I have to say, with the TPR fees if you want your EPD's published, one time yearly registration fee of $100 plus each calf's registration fee, now DNA testing on future herd sires in order to even register calves, the business model for a small registered herd just isn't panning out. I know who...

Hereford - New Sire DNA Policy

Anyone heard of this? I have to wonder with the new Trich testing and now this, how it will affect bottom line on bull sales for us Herf folks.....Seriously..... From Hereford e-News: The AHA will require all Hereford sires born after Jan. 1, 2011, to be DNA genotyped at the official AHA DNA...

    College Opinions?

....I'm having flashbacks myself........sure had a lotta fun. Nowadays its just kinda cool to take the dogs and sit with a beer there on the back porch, but without the dirt lot or the Presbyterian church there anymore, its just not the same. :cry2: **sigh** Just have to re-live it through...

    Evaluate These Heifers - Pics

Thanks ya'll, really appreciate the comments. :) Totally validates my thoughts, provides a few new ones, and helps to guide future breeding goals. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but we all know how hard it is sometimes to get a true representation of the animal. For example...

    Evaluate These Heifers - Pics

Thank ya'll for the comments. Its really good to hear that my thoughts are right along the same lines as everyone else's are. I'm a lousy photographer, and got their camera facing leg pulled forward on both the 1st and 2nd heifers thus making their hips not look as deep as they are. That...

    First Edition Heifer

Remember how "fond" LA4angus was about his Hoff's First Edition bull? :) Well, a couple of years ago, I bought a straw to breed one cow with who never came into heat at the breeders, so the straw was used to breed a big, knotty, baldy cow of ours, with the result being the below heifer...

    Opinions on this bull

I kept looking at this bull trying to figure out how to tactfully ask the question, "What happened to my rump roast, my prime rib, my ribeye?" without offending. I mean, those who live in glass houses, shouldn't throw stones, right? I'm by no means a great judge of confirmation, but...

    Polled Hereford Bull Opinions

Hi Bez! They're going to the sale barn, so where ever they go from there is where they'll be going......Honestly haven't even thought about retaining any daughters from him at this point. We're pretty space limited with a relatively young herd.

    Polled Hereford Bull Opinions

Aaaahhhh, therin lies the kicker........The heifers are out here with me and are watched religiously. I am usually present for each and every heifer birth. The commercial cows are up at Honey's place 130 miles away. He's usually there, but has been deployed for the next 18 months. I'm only...

    Polled Hereford Bull Opinions

Okay, I'll go see if I can get some pics of him with his head up for ya'll. Appreciate the comments, keep 'em comin'! Caustic, yup, he's a brother to yours. I liked what you were doing with your program and your F-1 heifers, and knowing that we had a few BeefmasterXHerf heifers coming of age...

    Polled Hereford Bull Opinions

Hi Topsquar, I knew as soon as I posted that someone would say that he had pink eye.....He's okay. Its been incredibly windy here lately. 20-40 mph for days on end, and they're all tearing a bit. I've been watching them carefully, and aside from the tearing, no one is behaving like they have...

    Polled Hereford Bull Opinions

Okay ya'll, I have my heavy duty Kevlar on, and am ready to hear ya'lls thoughts on this guy. I know what I like and don't like about him, but am curious if my thoughts correspond with yours. Call it a check on my ability to judge a bull! :D EPDs: BW - 1.2 WW - 16 YW - 25 MM - 13 M&G - 21...

    Compare A.I. Bulls Hereford

Being my first time to AI this year, and having the world at my fingertips as far as quality bulls to select from, I got overwhelmed very quickly with all the choices. So I sort of came up with a process this year to select AI bulls for the girls. I did a search on the Herford Assoc site for...

    numbering system each calf

I use the corresponding letter for the year the calf was born....R=2005, S=2006, and the mother's number. Example, Cow 301 calved in 2005 so calf is tagged R301. Guess you could put a number after that to designate what number calf it is ....R301-1

    Tigerstripe cattle

lol! That's what the sign said! I was just amazed at how harsh that country is, I guess I'm just used to the lush pastures of Brenham. Seems that there were quite a few irrigated hay fields there in Junction coming in on 377(?) As rough as it is out there, it sure is pretty....

    Tigerstripe cattle

Was just in Rocksprings on Monday looking at some property....gotta tell you folks that's some pretty rough and rocky country out there. Didn't see a Hereford one, but did see a few Angus herds on the way out to Carta Valley. The majority of the herds I saw were just plain ol Brahman cross...
