    Bull Dilemma

My only concern would be if your current bulls has enough calving ease to use on heifers

Most disgusting thing I've ever done

Had an experience like that last year. Had an older cow calf and penned her up to get calf going or adopt a calf don’t recall which right now but a few days later cow starts acting sick. We gave her some antibiotics and she showed no improvement. Started pushing like she was trying to calf so we...

    Buying vs retaining heifers

Another option if you are looking to add animals still is buy good older cows that are being culled for age and retain the best heifers from them. Typically around us you can find older cows that are very good just getting older. Most of the time they are proven producers and will give you some...

    Pairs with replacements?

I was thinking of putting some cow calf pairs with my replacement heifers and I was wondering what everybody else thinks of the idea. The heifers have been weaned and away from the cows since early November and I don't plan on taking the mothers of any of the heifers to that fence. Thanks in...

Any issues if heifer doesn't breed back?

I agree completely. I am trying to build my herd from within and I feel as long as they are fed well before they calf there is no excuse to not breed back. It hurts to sell them after one calf but to weed out the marginal fertility females it is what needs to be done. Just my opinion. Only...

Risk vs Reward, does calf size really matter?

I can attest to this. I went to a bull sale last Friday that had two full brothers with really good calving ease epds. The one with a 76# birthweight brought $12000. I bought his full brother for $5750. He had an 89# BW.

    EPD vs Actual Performance

Being an ET calf y0u don't get an accurate maternal production. Most ET programs that I have seen use bigger, heavier milking cows as recips.

    EPD vs Actual Performance

You also have to take into consideration if the calf was an ET calf that can greatly affect individual performance.

    Embryo transfer birth weights.

I was told exactly what double v said about et BWs meaning nothing and so I am wondering what those of you with experience think.

    Embryo transfer birth weights.

One bull that I am looking at has -2.3 bw and 8 ced epds but a 89lb bw. Use on hfrs or no?

    Embryo transfer birth weights.

I am looking to purchase a heifer bull from a breeder whose RA bulls are all ET this year. My question is if the epd's are good for heifers but the birthweight is 90-100 lbs, am I an idiot to consider them for hfrs or will they be fine?

    Breeding Heifers and Calves Birthweight

Another thing that I think makes a lot of difference in calving heifers is how much exercise they are getting before calving. If the are stuck in a small lot for extended periods they seem to have far more calving problems than if they are active and walking a lot until right before calving...

    Replacement Heifer questions?

Location also plays a large role imo. In our country with substantial cold and snow most years the cows would lose too much condition and the heifers wouldn't make target weight on cow feed alone, Just my thought.

100% of cows open with fertility tested bulls

Been there. Two years ago we used a 2yo bull on our heifers and got 0 bred. Passed a bse the day they were turned out. We bought him as a yearling and used him with an older bull the year before and got everything bred. Ran him with about 20-25 hfrs and every one was open. I watched him...

    best repeater needle

We have a couple of the Allflex repeaters. I prefer the 25cc ones for meds that use 2cc and the 50cc for the 5cc meds. Seem a little more accurate. Just my opinion.
