    mud farm

This has been the worst mud in my area that I have ever had. Poor cows sink to their knees in some areas. I’ve gotten stuck while walking through some areas. Had to pull my boots off to get out.

    Fire & Ice breedings

The milk EPD isn’t compared to breed average. The angus breed average is 24. A milk EPD of 32 is in top 10 percentile. A milk EPD of 18 is in the 85 percentile.

    Marda Blacksmith

Anyone used Marda Blacksmith reg# 18460820. He will be turning 3 years old shortly so should have some calves on the ground. Considering using him and wondering if the calving ease EPD is real and how the calves looked. Also anyone used his sire, Connealy Black Granite, in a fescue environment...

    Cow family dilution

I know a lot of emphasis is placed upon cow families but isn’t there a lot of dilution of the traits of a cow family over time. Unless someone is linebreeding I would think the use of different bulls over several generations would dilute a lot of the traits of the cow family. I would like to...

    Everyone's rule of thumb

I had an alberda traveler 416 daughter that routine went 3 weeks over. Always stuck on first AI and was always bred timed AI with rest of the herd. Almost always had heifer calf, something like 11 out of 14.

    Longest gestation time you've seen

I had one cow that was always late by at least 2 weeks. One time he was 304 days from AI date. I have kept replacements from her and they all go long also but not as much as she did.

    Kessler Frontman

I sampled him with the purchase of 5 straws. Got 2 bulls and 1 heifer. Definitely calving ease. My biggest problem was the docility. Sold all three since I don't like to deal with problem cows. The heifer was really nice, bulls were just average. Not much growth on the bulls.

A cow calving twice, in 20 days ????

I had one cow that had calves 4 days apart. Quite a surprise.

    Typical calf number??

Were the heifers implanted with growth hormones? That could affect fertility.

    Calving preparations

The smart a$$ answer is calving ease heifers bred to calving ease bulls. As for as to what to have on hand will depend upon your what area you are in and what facilities you have. Can you psot your location and what type of facilities you have available and someone in your area can give you the...

    birthweight question?

Don't forget that the cow/heifer contributes to the calving ease. There are some cows that will have difficulty calving even on a negative birth weight EPD or a high positive CED.

    Bred Heifers

I know everyone's situation is different, but why close them in the barn. Unless you have extreme conditions it is usually best to let them calve outside. I's really hard to get them into the barn within a day or two of calving. You may wind up confining some several days.

    Cystorelin Question

I would think 5 shots at AI would be very excessive. Some cows just don't breed very well AI. I would question her ability to be bred by the bull. I would definitely keep an eye on her. If she doesn't breed first time with the bull, I would send her to market as a slaughter animal.

    Ongoing calving problems

I am selling as bred heifers. I am only guaranteeing the first calve to be live. The heifers are mainly AI bred to calving ease bulls. I am using the same bulls for the heifers I keep and sell to others. He is using his bull for the breeding after the first calves. I had asked him about minerals...

    Ongoing calving problems

I have a small herd of apporx. 18-20 cows. I have been breeding the heifers and either keeping or selling the better ones. Most of the bulls become steers and are used for freezer beef. I have been doing this for about 9 years. In this time I have had one calf that I lost at calving. My problem...

    Pedigree Accuracy

I have often wondered how accurate the pedigrees on cattle really are. I think there are more mistakes that a lot of people realize. Over the last year or so I have found mistakes in purebred breeders catalogs a total of three times. Each time the discrepancy was discovered when the Genestar...

    Calf Weighing Outfits

I use a home set up of a sling with handles on it that I hook onto the old time cotton weighing scales and attach that to the bale spear on my tractor. Lift them up, get a weight, release them. Of course you got to catch them first unless you are there right after calving.

    Woodhill Foresight

I have used all that I purchased. The vet that does the AI also suggested having it checked but I had already used all of it.

    Woodhill Foresight

Has anyone used Woodhill Foresight this past year and if so did you have any problems with the semen. I used 10 units of him on 7 different cows and was 0 for 10. The success rate of the rest of my AI was around 60% for timed AI. Just wondering if there may have been a problem with his semen or...

    AI Stud Life Expectancy

I was looking through the SydGen sale catalog that came with the Nov Angus Journal. They actually list which reference sires are deceased. There was a lot of them that were deased and were 4 years old or less. Do most breeders that the longevitity of AI studs into consideration in their...
