    Average hay consumption

Don't forget waste and that can depend on how you feed. I figure 1 5x6 bale per month per cow/calf pair and usually have about 20% left over.

    Lime?

I usually put lime on when a fall soil test says I need to put at least 1 ton to the acre. Usually around 5 years here but it could be different depending on the type of soil.

    4 x 6 or 5 x 5 bales

    4x6 3.14 x 9 x 4 = 113.04 cu. ft. 5x5 3.14 x 6.25 x 5 = 98.125 cu. ft.

    4 x 6 or 5 x 5 bales

It's not strain on the tractor, it's strain on the baler if you make an oversized bale. I usually set my monitor on my 5x6 baler at 68" and by the time I get stopped in a heavy windrow, IT might be a 70" bale.

    Haying on shares

I will bale on a 2/3 split but the owner has to fertilize. If its really good hay I will do it on the halves. Usually it's cheaper for the owner to just pay me $25 a bale and keep all the hay. I usually have to sell it anyway. I guess sometimes the owner doesn't want to bother with selling what...

    Spray am. Noon or pm?

I've seen some articles of the same research but don't buy it and usually spray as early as I can. It would be hard for me to spray from the middle of the day until almost dark and avoid wind drift anyway.

    Fertilizer grade ?

It's the percentages of each in the mix. Never seen them get so tight as to add decimal points on the bill where I buy fertilizer but I bet I pay for what I get.

what does hay sell for in your area?

Hay that good would bring the same here too. Especially tested. You should be able to winter cows on it easy.

    Hay is Stressful

The hay will be low quality here but it looks like plenty of it once it dries up a little. Might get some good hay on the second cutting.

what does hay sell for in your area?

I sold 5x6 coastal and coastal/bahia mix bales for $40 to $60 a bale last fall depending on quality. Sold small coastal squares of tested at 13% and 56 TDN for $8. Baled for two neighbors and charged $26 a bale. We average 4 5x6 bales first cutting and 3 after that per cutting per acre around...

    Johnson Grass Growth...

Fertilizer and drought conditions or a frost may cause problems. Other than that it's good graze as long as it lives. Like others have said, cattle will graze it short and kill it.

    sooooo i got a sparyer

If you spray liquid fertilizer and want your pump to last, make sure you clean it out well every time.

Rescue grass taking over hay meadow

I cut and baled a 12 acre coastal meadow this week but it was mostly rescue grass. My neighbor told me if I didn't kill the rescue grass it would set back the coastal. I usually cut it before the coastal greens up, but I know its using nutrients. Not sure what I could do except try to cut it...

    Building soil

I would think sooner but it depends on how you go about it. Most of my pastures are sandy loam soil and I think the single most important thing I've done for soil quality was cross fencing and planned rotations. Planting winter grasses and clover has helped with organic matter and cutting back...

    Rabbit fertilizer?

Wasted trip with the sprayer probably. I just can't see you putting much npk down at 2 gallons of rabbit turd mixture to the acre.

When are you baling your 1st cutting and how much nitrogen?

I should be cutting rye grass hay in the next couple weeks but with the rain we are having it looks like a while before I can get in the fields. I will start cutting coastal and bahia grass the middle to end of next month. It varies depending on night temperatures but that's usually normal here...

Net Wrap Removal Tips and Tricks

I would like to see the results of a study when keeping hay for two seasons stored outside. That's when I notice net wrapped bales really keep hay longer than string tied. If its fed the season its baled, it doesn't seem to make a huge difference. Also, I would rather take net wrap off, but I...

Help me understand these hay test reults

This can vary depending on the quality of the cubes but 38% and 20% cubes have about the same energy per pound. If you are feeding poor quality hay free choice, but plenty of it, the 38% cubes are fine at half the rate it would require of the 20% cubes. If you are limit feeding hay you would...

    Forage test result

If you have plenty of it to feed, a high protein supplement will work. It looks like normal coastal hay that was cut too late around me. Are you buying the 14% grower bulk? If so I would mix some cottonseed meal with it. Texasbred could give you more technical advice.

Interesting video. It sounds like you have a solid program for managing you pastures.
