    Before and After

Isn't it just about having good cattle? I really wouldn't care if one was purple as long as it has the traits I'm looking for. Isn't crossbreeding done usually to bring about the best traits of both breeds to improve your herd? I don't think the associations are wrong for recognizing that...

    low bw shorthorn bull

Try Ali - he's a great heifer bull & usually crosses well with angus cows.

    Mean Heifer - advice?

Another bit of advice... Stay away from the sales until you are real comfortable at this game - & yes it is a game. Find a reputable breeder or jockey and let them help you learn the game. I know a lot of these jockeys get a bad name, but many of them love the show cattle business and really...

    Mean Heifer - advice?

From one mom to another I say cut your losses now and find a new calf. There is no amount of money worth getting your child hurt. We went through the same thing the first year we showed cattle - we cut our losses, got another heifer and my son is still healthy and loves showing. Even if your...

    Shorthorn from USA

She was bred to a bull called Thunderstruck. Still trying to decide for sure what to breed her back to. Has to be something that is clean and is known for making nice females. We really wanted a heifer out of her but that's the way it goes!!! We did not run at the Pace shows this year -...

    Shorthorn from USA

Thanks for all the compliments!!! I'm glad to hear that everyone likes her as much as we do. She delivered a bouncing baby bull calf last night!!! Right on time - today was her due date. He was up and bucking and jumping this morning!! She's out of Kool. Unfortunately because of his TH...

    Some old show heifers

Killala, I like your Shorthorns!!! It's really cool to see what people in other countries are showing. I posted one of our now retired Shorthorn - take a look & tell me what you think!!! She looks much different now that she's a cow & not a show heifer but we still adore her just the same!!!

    Shorthorn from USA

In light of the recent Shorthorn pics from Australia I thought I'd post one of our Shorthorn heifer. Ironically we call her Daisy also. As you can tell that is one proud 10 year old on the lead. In this pic Daisy had just won Supreme Champion heifer at a 100+ head jackpot. :D :D

    Buyer Baskets

Last year we had golf towells made for our 4-H kids to give to their buyers. They were maroon with gold lettering with the name of our 4-H club embroidered on them. They were under $5 each.

    County Fair

Don't make rules just for the sake of making rules. Make sure that you can enforce them. I really like the idea of exhibitors having a say in the rules & show schedule. Granted, you can't please everyone, but you might get some additional support just because you listen.

    Hair

I, like AAOK, would like to commend this young person for being out there working with the calf. She could be sitting in front of the TV or trying to figure out where to get the next "fix" from. I don't care who thinks show cattle should have hair or not I think it's a great way for kids to...

    Getting Ready for Jackson

Just help him remember that there is nothing that he can do in the show ring that the judge hasn't seen before!! My son was also very nervous at his first couple of shows until one of the older members started laughing about some of the mistakes she made when she was a beginner. He realized...

    oh my gosh...

One of the best decisions we made after our first year of showing was to stop using a grooming chute when the calves are young. We try to get all of ours where you can clip, fit, dry etc. in the stall so we don't have to drag a chute everywhere.

    Beet Pulp??

Ok, I have another line of thought for this thread. AAOK, you say that beet pulp is mostly sugar or carbs. Have you ever heard of feeding potatoes to animals to increase their appetite. We tried this with a steer last year & it worked, but it drives me crazy because I don't understand why it...

    Donor Cow

I would want her open & ready to flush. If I'm shopping for a donor cow I want her to be ready to donate..... Not to mention I can then choose the bull.

Heifer: Kids Show her or Not? (pic)

I say show her. She may not be perfect, but if it's his first year she doesn't need to be. Being gentle is much more important!!! She'll change a lot after you have her on feed for a couple of months. Good Luck.

Please give me your opinions on these Bulls (pics)

If I was picking for club calves only I would pick the simmi x bull. If I was picking for commercials only I would pick the Angus or the Simmi - black baldies sell pretty well around here. I don't like the Angus for club calves if your cows are mostly Angus - at least if your planning on...

    First Show

Check the website to see how current your health papers need to be. We've never been there, but from what I hear if you exhibit as a junior you must care for the cattle yourself. From what I understand that includes clipping, feeding, etc.. Someone please correct me if I misunderstood!! If...

    Crazy Steer

It's kind of like the "sacking out" the horse theory. When someone first told me to do this years ago I thought they were out of their mind, but then they explained the reasons behind it & it really does contribute to the well being of the animal if they don't stress over loud noises, stuff...

Terry, Sam's heifer looked great - she'll be a good one when she's older!! Sam did a great job showing - it can be a little intimidating out there in the Grand Drive with all those bigger kids & calves, but she did great!! The judge's name was Brent Murphy - not sure where he's from. I...
