    Cow sale today

Good price, 1700lb cows aren't the easiest to sell

It's what I would do, first sale of the year will probably be the best time to sell in the next 4 or 5 months.

I agree with that, steady to soft through October and then head up a little.

Good heavy 4wts and light 5wts were back in to the low 1.50s today. I sold some late cut 880lb Herefords last week that I had bought and banded 6 weeks ago in the .90$ range weighing 800lbs, they brought 1.18$.

    Sale barn 3/19

Sounds about like it is here. I think the last 2 weeks was the high for this time around. I sold some 670lb tiger stripe steers for 1.67$ and some good black and BWF steers at 580lbs for 1.96$ this week.

    Junk cattle

    You done just fine.

    3n1 worth

Here's how I would figure it, calves 500 to 600lbs, depends on exact size and steer or heifer, but you could figure them at 900$, then a good black 1st or 2nd period 9 year old, so it's really a short and solid worth 14 or 1500$. So split I guess up to 2400$, as a pair I would like to be in them...

Is now a good time to sell calves ?

My opinion is that the first week or 2 of the year may be the high this time around.

Fair price for Cow calf pairs?

I would say about 2000$ on the very best pairs and maybe 1600$ on the plainer cows If they are good.

    buy in question

There's good things about both options, I can't disagree about what they have said are the negatives for buying heifers, but for the long term picture and the current market I think you might be better off to buy as many heifers as you can and then cull the ones that don't do as well. You could...

    Sale barn price question.

Yep, and the way I figured it back when they were bringing 3500$, a 6 year old cow would be 10 before she was paid for. That's 3 years less than the way you figure it at the current calf prices, and in my opinion it was a bad buy even with the market like it was back then.

    Sale barn price question.

They were already going to take years even with the record calf prices. Just going to take more years now. Or if they had any cheaper or paid for cattle they can take some away from them to help pay for the ones they overpaid for.

I was surprised that it was still as good as it was this week. We had some 4wts bring 2.19$ here yesterday, but they were perfect in every way, the majority of 4wts were around 2.00$. Same with 5wts, some really nice sets brought up into the low 1.90s, but most were in the 1.70s.

    Sold 50 Steers Today

I like your way of looking at it, I buy calves every week so I need the market to work with me a little, but as far as the calves off my cows I agree completely with you. I sold alot of good 5wt steers for 70 cents to 1$ a pound about 7 years ago and I can live with double that now and be happy.

    Sold 25 Friday

That's strange, but it's how it is. I can buys steers 15 to 25 cheaper in TN and KY than I can here, but heifers might only be 5$ cheaper or less.

Sold a few at Guthrie, KY

Your cattle did well. And so did the barn owners, good to hear they handled it like they did.

    Which way to go

I would buy bred cows and put a cheaper bull in with them. Might get someone doing what your doing to buy them when you sell them. I don't think there's any way that the cows are not a safer way to go.

Buyers, what do you look for?

if your going to keep them for a while and feed them after you cut them, that will straiten them out some. Worm them and feed them good and that will change there look. Some multimin will help also.
