Should I be concerned about this cow? Should I do something?

Happy to say that I've witnessed him nursing... not well, but nursing just the same. So now I know the key..... Begin to second guess myself and start getting concerned and then post here, and sure enough whatever it was I was worried about will prove me a worry-wart. :lol2: :lol2: :lol2:

Anyone familiar with Kwik-Way cattle chutes?

My darling husband just picked one up with hopes of freeing up the mechanisms. A little bit of spray and elbow grease and all parts seem to be working like a champ. Just wondering if there is anything we should know or be aware of or be looking for. The sides of the chute are pipes, 5 on...

Should I be concerned about this cow? Should I do something?

Thanks Alan. I try to not interfere (even though sometimes it's hard) but I also know with 'my' girls -- the ones I've raised, if I need to interfere, they seem to know I'm there to help. I do teat check for cleanliness - that's always my sign of 'are they nursing' -- I can say with...

Should I be concerned about this cow? Should I do something?

Yeah, kind of what I'm afraid of because that will mean running her through the chute and into the trailer. She won't stand still for me. She sees me coming and takes off. Oh well. That's all part of it. I'll get her in the barn, into the head stalls and give junior a lesson in milk supply...

Can a cow 'withdraw' her water bag??

Thank you. It was probably hanging about a foot with a small 'water balloon' at the bottom. I'll be out throughout the night checking on her as well as my 'appears to be abandoned' calf.

Should I be concerned about this cow? Should I do something?

Had a cow calf last night. She's new to us, so I don't really know her calving history or her mothering skills. We don't run them into the barn, although if need be, we could put her in the barn if we run her through the chute and into the trailer. She went about cleaning him off, but didn't...

Can a cow 'withdraw' her water bag??

Stupid question alert ... I know a water bag when I see it, I really do. I was tending to a calf that was abandoned by his mother and noticed that a water bag was showing on another cow. After giving 'Shishkabob' his bottle, I went to check on the cow -- very excited to witness yet another...

    bulls with an attitude

Life's too short to deal with a bull with an attitude. Ship him. There's more where he came from.

It's only taken 7+ years, but I've finally caught a birth

I know, it's totally corny! But I'm just on cloud 9 that after all this time, I finally was able to catch a birth from water bag to calf. :D My husband thinks I'm crazy, but oh well. We had two in the barn, separated out for butchering - that's why we bought them, to turn them around...

Can it be true? A 10 month old bull breeding?

I give those dates and ages with caution... they lived else where and I don't know their exact calving dates, just what the previous owner remembers. But they were definitely not a year old before they came to live here in August.

Can it be true? A 10 month old bull breeding?

He's apparently a sweet talker... must be the curls he's got. Thanks! I was just looking for a little reassurance that it was possible.

    Calving has begun

I love waking up to finding calves! I was not (mistakenly) anticipating any this year... We have been leaning towards IA, but our own bull didn't want to leave last year, so he's already proven his domination two times, and likely a third. And just to keep it interesting, some heifers that...

Can it be true? A 10 month old bull breeding?

:lol2: :lol2: I guess so. He must be suffering from Napoleon syndrome.

Can it be true? A 10 month old bull breeding?

Hi. :tiphat: I'm really just putting this out there for the more experienced. We are a small farm - likely considered a hobby farm. We bought heifers and 2 -10 month old bulls in August from a neighbor getting out of cattle. I asked if there was the possibility of anyone being bred. He...

    Banding/cutting yearlings

Thanks so much for a great explanation! This is why I love this place. Learn something new and useful every day! And since we have some yearlings to castrate, this will be good to know. - I'm pretty sure that husband has finally decided that castrating early on is the better option. He's...

    Bull trouble

I don't know where his final destination was, but the check came today and I'll be building my horse barn with it - well, some of it anyway. The best part was when we got to the auction, he walked off that trailer like he'd done it all his life. I often put words in my animals head and his...

    Bull trouble

I just sent my 4 yo Hereford to auction, he was a great breeder and served us and his harem well. But it took 5 attempts and a 65 horsepower MF tractor to drag his rear onto the trailer. He did not want to go!
